The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Out of interest, what do people set with the two custom settings?
 
Not sure what i'll use for c1 etc yet.....
Macro modes seems fun :)
Did a full hd vid and converted to avi, but its jerky and vid lags behind sound. Hoping this is just my ancient laptop (iphone vids are ok, and problem is there straight off x10 rather than the conversion)....wonder if it will be ok if i carry on burning to dvd for the telly...
 
Anyone heard about feature/bug where you can be in aperture priority and still have the shutter speed showing without half pressing the shutter button?
Doesnt work in auto iso. You put it to P mode, half press shutter while turning to A.
I've heard about it, but no joy.... :( (not looked into firmware versions yet as a thought)
Would be nice! Really missing that when not using the dslr....

Not sure Im understanding correctly but mine shows SS without any trickery or workaround. Agree it doesn't in auto ISO though
 
Still not picked mine up yet, was working til late and was gripped by the golf! Get my grubby mitts on it tomorrow after and a nice wee 16gb class 10 SD card en route too!
 
I have a request for you lot please :)
My photo guru is off travelling in the non-touristy parts of Cambodia and has decided that if the X10 image quality is good enough for me, then it will be plenty good enough for her too.
She is planning to carry the X10 around her neck for opportunistic shots and for use in places where using a 5DII might be indiscreet.

Please can you recommend a book on how to get the best from the X10.
She's an experienced photographer in her 70's and normally uses a 5DII to shoot people pictures, somewhere in the grey area between street photography and portraiture.
All opinions welcomed - thanks!
 
This is my first post on TP, and I just wanted to thank the contributors to this thread for helping me decide to buy the X10. I'd been dithering between it and a handful of other options as a camera to take on an upcoming trip (I've been using a Nikon D80 but am sick of lugging it, plus three lenses, around in my backpack on long trips).

Reading the first couple of dozen pages in this thread -- and, particularly, seeing the sample images -- helped to make up my mind. So I ordered a refurb on Friday and since then have read through the rest of the thread (partly to pick up tips and partly just in anticipation of getting my hands on the camera).

It just arrived and the battery is charging. I don't normally sign up to forums, but I thought I'd do so while I'm waiting (well, it was either that or do some work). With a bit of luck I'll be posting some images (or more likely pleas for help) before long. Cheers, all.

Just make sure you aren't in auto ISO and aren't in auto DR then it it will show up. You don't have to try and trick the camera :thumbs:

Glad you signed yourself up to ownership of an X10. You'll love it as I dare say, will your shoulders!! It is a very capable little thing but remember to get extra batteries for it since small though as it is, it's rather a thirsty beast ;)

Thanks for the welcome. As it turns out, I have a question for the forum already. One of the first things I did after the battery charged was try out the OVF (I take a lot of photos in bright sunlight, so this is a handy feature for me). What I found was that all the resulting images were wonky. I know that there's only about 85% coverage and I think I understand the issues with parallax, but it seems like the OVF is at an angle to the sensor.

The following images show what I mean (with apologies for the very dull images and the blur of raindrops -- it's just what I can see out of the window and has some handy horizontal lines). The first was composed using the LCD:

And the second was composed using the OVF (in other words, I lined up the top of the building you can see in the LCD sample with the top of the viewfinder image):

I tried several times and get the same slant in each case. The same applies to shorter focal lengths (I did a couple of test shots indoors). This seems unusable to me, but I wanted to check that I wasn't missing anything obvious.
 
Why don't you pop it on a tripod and then get the horizon straight using the LCD, then have a look through the OVF and see if it looks askew? I may be that your right arm is just maybe slightly dropping when you've got the camera at your face?

That was it, was in auto DR....ok, so cancel my 'new' information for everyone lol :)

I didn't think I had a tripod to hand but I just remembered a tiny one stuck away in a drawer. I set it up and the skewed angle between the OVF and LCD is really obvious. Looks like my new toy is going straight back to Fuji.

That is strange, I didn't think it would matter what way the glass was inserted into the camera as it's not got an focus points or horizon lines on it. I assumed it would be like looking through a sheet of glass and then tilting it slighting, you will still see the same image and just the glass angle will have moved. Very weird.
 
That is a very strange problem, as the zoom viewfinders are sealed units that locate into a fixed position on top of the camera.

Let us know how you get on with Fuji.
 
Before you send it back to Fuji John have you tried focusing using the LCD and the cross hair focus point. You can access this via the AEL/AFL button. Line it up with a horizontal plane in your LCD view and see what the result is. Compare this to using the OVF. Remember that the OVF offers a different view to the LCD. If you get the same result then give Fuji a call. I think they may have to send you a return item form before you send it back to them.

It is weird. And I can confirm that it's the OVF that's out of alignment, not the LCD image, because when the camera is completely level the OVF image is skewed. I'll call Fuji this afternoon.

AEL/AFL didn't do anything (I'm in P mode) but the AF button gave an array of crosshairs (so that I could select a focus point) so I assume that's what you meant. I lined up a horizontal line with a row of those crosshairs, and the OVF view is clearly skewed.

I hope it doesn't take Fuji long to send a replacement, I'm feeling really enthusiastic about getting to grips with this camera! Incidentally, the OVF also has several visible specks of dust inside -- even before I noticed the misalignment, they were bugging me and I might have sent it back anyway.

I just got off the phone to Fuji. They said they'd send packaging for the return and then send a replacement once they get the faulty camera back. I asked whether they actually have any refurbs available (as the website is showing zero refurb stock now), and the guy I spoke to called to check the stock.

When he got back on the line, he said they have one which they're going to send up to him and he'll post it to me today along with the return packaging. If that happens then I'll be pretty impressed with Fuji's customer service (even if this X10 should never have passed through their checks).

Fingers crossed I may have the new one tomorrow or on Wednesday.

Hey Duncan (all) - I'm back!!! Wow hell of a lot of postings to catch up with throughout September. The sensor changed X10 worked a treat. Will post when photos are ready although I think it will be a while. I have already put up the stag Oktoberfest ones up on my FLICKR but not sure many are safe to share on here ;-) Japan and Korea should have some good photos though. Before I get those done I still need to put up some a Croatia and Plitvik set.

I brought this and found it quite comprehensive. Advantage is all your friend need do is get to an internet source and she will be able to download it onto her phone to read whenever (I imagine ordering hardcopy books out there, whilst traveling, will be a nightmare).
 
OMG - just seen the filters coming with the new firmware. Partial colour filter fascinates the hell out of me. Will it really work as well as the image describes!? Go fuji.. go fuji :woot:

She's 70+ and only has a phone that makes phone calls, so I suspect the paper option will probably suit her better.
At least the choice is hers to make!

I've been pretty happy with Alex White's book. I think he might have been wrong on a few minor details (according to this thread), but mostly it's fine. I don't like the sample pictures which are mostly of toy models, but I can see why he uses them (predictable and comparable). There's a lot in it... about 300 pp plus appendixes. Very comprehensive ToC and index.

Duncan - Chris T's suggestion is the same book as the link I posted. You can order a hardback copy as well. Just thought that if your friend is moving around a hard copy may be hard to order to a fixed abode. She could print it and bind it which may be best option but not sure how much that would cost at an internet cafe becuase as Chris says - there's quite a few pages.

Picked it up after work! Battery is on charge and I've got another 2 on the way. Just hope my SD Card shows up tomorrow as I've had to use a microSD card in a SD adaptor just now.

Ting! - just realised what your earlier comments meant!
She's off travelling in a months time. So she has time to bond with the X10 before she goes.
Paper book I think will be very much the preferred option and I suspect she will buy it from Amazon; I'll let you know if I guessed wrong :)
She hasn't travelled for years, but when she did she was awarded FRGS for her documentation of properly remote locations.
This vintage India gallery of hers is closest to her current shooting style.

She's taking 64Gb of cards for the X10 and much much more on CF for the DSLRs. She doesn't want to risk running out! :gag:
Besides - I know who will happily buy some cards off her when she gets back :)
Batteries - did anyone mention batteries - LOL!

P.S. This is a working relationship I have with my photography guru - I'm installing an additional 1Tb of disk space for her before she leaves and I suspect upgrading from LR2 to LR4 will be needed ASAP...

Cheers Duncan, just got me a bit more chilled out with my photography I find, a bit more fun for taking pics of them. I was trying too hard with dslr if that makes sense.

Was on the D90 with 35 1.8 yesterday first time since I got the x10 and forgot how sharp that cheapo (for slr) setup is though, both cameras have their place. Slr be my lowlight setup, but x10 is just asking you to take pics, cant be bad....

The pic above, in my mind if I had the D90 out, i would be checking background clutter, dof, flash exp etc, with x10 i just snap - psychological with me :( would have got a technically better pic, but come to realise its not about that for me...for me its the 'moment'

Lets see how the battery goes then. Tbh i can live with it (with a backup on its way!), this whole game is a tradeoff....

Got a nice little black case for a tennerish, how good does that orange retro case look though - anyone seen it? Shame its about £130 :(

I thought it was noisey at first (i mean even at lowish iso) but starting to figure out how to handle DR and iso limits etc, great little camera
 
Ordered Alex White's book in black and white from Amazon this evening, and sent the confirmation to Alex. He sent the free e-edition within 30 mins!

The paperback book would be a MUCH better option than printing and binding. Mine seems to be of reasonable construction and has stood up to much thumbing back and forth. My only concern is that White might be a bit pedestrian for your friend; he does go through everything, perhaps rather laboriously at times. But there are so many options and so many dependencies that I suspect you need to be pedantic to avoid being misleading.

Laborious is good!
She is great at following 'recipies' and can find the right one fast, but not so good at working how technology works by herself.
In short - she is a great pupil :)
