Hellooo :D

I'm thinking of getting my first lens other than my kit 18-55mm lens. I'm looking at the 55-200mm and I've read a load of reviews and the all seem very good indeed and I've found the lens for £128 with free postage so happy with that.

Do you think the lens will give me that extra bit of zoooom I'm after when shooting my friends yacht?

I'm also looking to use it for portraits and just a bit more flexibility.

My other question is the lens comes with a hood. Is it worth putting that on all the time?

Thanx in advance!!

Spoony

Depends how far away the yacht is really!

Is it worth putting that on all the time?

Yes. Always use a hood.

Thanx for the hood advice :D

Good point on how far away he is! Haha well from the pics I've seen in reviews there seemed to be a decent amount of zoom on it.

I've checked the specs and it is a VR one! Seems like a great price to me too!

If it's the VR one then it's a cracking price, it's great little lens :)

Thats what I thought too! I was going to get a tamron but the lack of VR was putting me off then I found the Nikon for £135 and then £128! Seemed good to me but thought I would check with those in the know!

Its a great lens, really sharp. VR really comes in whn shooting videos.

.
i have one "here"

extras include a Nikon felt pouch and a Hoya UV(0) filter

open to offers - but consider it is in "as-new" condition - hardly used

Great lens for what it is. Always use a hood, an extra bit of protection.
Here are some shots from when I took it to Turkey. It's a great piece of kit and lightweight. Obviously won't perform like the 2.8 and focusing is slow comparitively, but the results are not too shabby IMO. Hope I didn't derail your thread with this pics ;) Minimal sharpening in Lightroom from what I can remember and taken with D60 or D80 as I had both with me.

Slightly larger ones are in my Turkey set in case your interested.

If that's brand new, I'd put it in the 'too good to be true bracket'. Even one of the most commonly complained about sites doesn't have it that cheap;)

Might be fine and totally legit- be wary is all I suggest.

also if it is from an on-line UK supplier, it will no doubt be a "grey" import from, maybe HK, and may not carry the Nikon warranty but only the Suppliers - who ship back to HK for repairs - many stories of waiting months for repair

Camerabox (grey imports) have it for £145 delivered however the also have the non-vr version and it is around the price the op quoted, at just under £130 incl. p+p.....

I will let you know once it arrives :) I'll register it with Nikon to check all is well.

Thanx for posting up the pics they look spot on for the money!

Hey, no problem. Good luck with getting the lens and hopefully it is what it seems.

Just remember that taking pics also takes practice and don't be dissappointed with your first results with this (or any) lens ;)

Yep I know that! Good old digital solves the problem. I just take as many shots as I can and get the best ones out of the lot!

Lets hope all is good with the lens :D

Just as an update the lens came earlier this week beautifully packed delivered by DHL all boxed with the hood bag etc and I've registered it with Nikon without any issues and had a quick play with it and all seems great so far :D

Hopefully I will have some time on the weekend to give it a really good test.

Got to ask.... Are Camerabox "grey imports" as have ordered from these a couple of times in the past - all I seem to see from them is that they slate SRS for being HK based etc...

Makes me wonder thou as I got my MB-D10 from them - Strange as my Warranty slip wasn't included as they said "that they send that to Nikon on our behalf for registering..."

Would be interesting to know if they are "importers" thou...

that's really good news - just a note...........
the VR looks for vibration and corrects it
when it's locked firmly onto a tripod there is none, and it tends to get electronically confused and "hunts".. Nikon say to turn off the VR if "firmly" clamped to a tripod

nobody asked - where did you get such a good price ?

I don't know if it is an import but I've registered it fine along side my other Nikon kit. Its from http://www.wolu.co.uk/ and its £123 and £128 with DHL next day postage tracked.

Thanx for the tip Yardbent :D

It's not SRS that camerabox claim are HK-based, it's SimplyElectronics (who are HK-based). SRS are (in my experience) "bait and switch" merchants, but they are Nikon-UK dealers, so at least you can get any problems with them sorted out at a higher level :naughty:

The only lens I've bought from Camerabox came with a Nikon USA warranty card, but normally (on the "pro" lenses anyway) the box and serial number will be different for US lenses when compared to EU ones.

Well what a ***** day!! I was just taking some water drop shots and I left the camera stood on the gorilla pod and as I walked to the tap its fallen off my work top and now it won't move!!!!

I can't believe it :(

Can you get lenses repaired? I'm gutted!!

You can but i'd imagine the repair would out-way the original cost of the lens...

You can either sell it on the bay as spares or repairs & what you coup back put towards another one...

I do feel for you as that is a real b****r to what has happend..

Great! I'm gonna see if I can find any repair places and see what they say but I bet your right! :(

Very sorry to hear about the new lens - what a shock to see it fall...:gag:

just to let you know should the repairs be un-economical....
the new member casfan [who bought my 55-200 VR] is having problems with his Bank...not his fault I add - but a mix-up with the transfer

he has asked for Wednesday to sort it out
should you need a replacement - keep an eye on my thread

however - hope the repairs are viable for you !

it's is in the thread ....:rules:

I accepted £140 ...but will give the chap until Wednesday evening to find his missing BT transfer....he kindly said I could re-list but in fairness I gave him a few days leeway

the thread says SOLD pending - that will be changing one way or the other on Wednesday pm

you may indicate "acceptance" and I will put you in second place :)

cheers

Don't worry then you can buy them for £128 including postage brand new. Thanx anyways :)
