Thinking of upgrading from Canon 50D to 5D MKii (or 7D)

Hi,

I currently own a 50D but the urge to upgrade has started....

It would be great to hear from people who have upgraded from the 50D to either a 5D MKii or 7D as I am thinking of doing just that. The 7D can now be obtained from just over 1K which makes it reasonably attractive. Plus the addition of a faster AF system

The 5D MKii has always been my dream camera but cost has always been a factor:|

Thanks

What are you MAIN photography subjects?

While they can cover some of the same ground, the 7D and 5DII are very different cameras aimed at different segments of the market. You really need to buy the camera that will bring most benefit to your photography.

Hi,

I mainly do landscapes and portraits. I believe the 5D MKii excels at this ?

Thanks

You're dead right Chubbers.

This is the happy hunting ground for the 5D2. I'm sure you can pick one up from the sales forum for not much more than a BNIB 7D. In fact I'm sure I saw something earlier. Here it is

Alternatively there is MPB Photographic

Good hunting

As said already - What lens do you have already? I upgraded from a 50D to a 7D and also a 5D2. You say that you are mostly into landscapes, but in my opinion without quality glass the 50D will probably do you just as well.

I upgraded as I am a bit of a gear freek, as well as having enough money to do it and knowing that I would soon be retiring and no more disposable income. If I had been on a budget, I would have made sure that I had absolutely cracking glass before upgrading my body. For what it's worth, my all time favourite ever picture here was taken with the 50D and 17-55/2.8 IS combo. Not sure I'd have got a better picture with either a 7D or 5D2.

If I was restricted with cash, I don't think I'd be upgrading the body if I'm honest. Do you feel that the 50D is restricting your photography? I ask this as I'm not sure that the FF actually gives me better photographs, perhaps just makes me feel better when I get it out.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies:)

Currently, I have the F17-40mm L for my landscapes and the 50mm 1.4 USM for my portraits

I think I am right in saying that the 50mm will work fine with a full frame.

I do like my 50D (apart from the AF when I try to do close ups). Like I mentioned before, the 5DMKii has always been my dream camera.

With regards to lenses, I will probably look to buy a 70-200mm lens in the future but I am in no rush to do that

Correct that is what the 5DII is made for, what lenses do you have? Any crop lens wont fit I am sure you know that anyway :). Very jealous by the way!!

Don't be, It will cost me heaps :)

Nice donkey avatar BTW

i went from the 50D to a 5Dmk11 and the difference is night and day - i personally think the 50D is the worst camera I've ever had the misfortune to own. i have taken thousands of shots with the 5D2 and it still has the ability to surprise me, its metering system is spot on and its ability to capture detail from shadows and still retain detail in the sky without blowing it is stunning.

You will see a bigger IQ improvement by changing the 50D to a 5D2 than by changing your glass.

Hi, just what I wanted to hear (haha). But why such a downer on the 50d?

What sort of photography do you generally do ?

I ve read that the AF system could be better on the 5D MKii (its has got be better than the AF on the 50D surely?)

Sorry for the barrage of questions!

Just had a peek at your photo, the colours are stunning!

Care to share the settings?

I dint like the images it producds , low iso noise , erratic metering i had no confidence in the cameras ability to produce the goods - i had more faith in my D70s and preferred the images from it.

I do a lot of macro, as i need only step into the garden for subjects - but also do a bit of most things - theres a few samples at quite large resolution on my flickr.

I've had no real issues with the focus - I've shot football , rugby birds etc without issue - BUT if i was shooting sports professionally i wouldnt use a 5D2 ;)

Thanks - Had a look at the exif - f/8, 6 sec exposure, 200 ISO

Swag72, I see you own both the 7d and 5d mkII. If you don't mind, what are your thoughts on the AF on both cameras?

Thanks

I have learnt to really rate the 7D, but it was a bit of a hard road. The 5D2 I loved from the start, the IQ is superb.

I really like the AF on the 7D and do consider it better than the 5D2 for some stuff. For example, I was taking some pics of the puppy this evening running around and I grabbed the 5D2. I didn't nail the focus on any of the action ones and knew that for that particular situation I had the wrong camera. It was great for the portrait quiet type pics though. I'm not slating the 5D2 AF, it is the same as that on the 50D. So if you haven't struggled with the AF on the 50D, you'd be fine with the 5D2. But, if you have used something with a more zingy AF, I think you then learn the limitations of the 5D2. You just need to work within those parameters, you are looking at 2 cameras that are different in many ways.

There will be many that say they don't find the AF on the 5D2 limiting, and many have got some cracking action shots with it. Personally, because I am lucky to have both I try to pick the right camera for the job.

If I could only keep one of them ............... Well, that would be difficult and often changes!!

Swag72, thanks for your insight, very useful. I think for the type of photography that i do, the 5DMKii would fit the bill despite the limitations of the AF (IMO). Just got to learn and live with it more...

Thanks for that, maybe I need to practise more with the AF :)
