I want to video a project im undertaking over two days on my 5d Mk 11
I was thinking time lapse but from my limited grasp I don't think I can on my camera. Can it be set to capture a frame say every 10seconds? and can I record to an external hard drive for the extra capacity?

You need an intervalometer, like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001C6I1HU/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Or you could install magic lantern.
There'd be no need to go full resolution so a larger CF card should be OK?
Even the small jpg will give you a very large HD video when converted.

You can also do it tethered to a computer using the EOS software - in that case you could record to the computer drive.
I believe this does not require the intervalometer.

If you shoot small jpeg (2784 x 1856 - about 2MB) then I reckon 16GB will give you something like 8000 images. At 6 frames per minute that would give you 1333 minutes or 22 hours.

Thankyou,i now have my camera hooked up to my laptop and have sussed the time lapse thing,I can get the images saved to my hard drive, but not to my card in the camera,is it possible? And will the usb lead charge or power the camera?

Now im concerned about battery life.I have the grip and two batts, will they last a day or 3000 ish shots?
can i run the camera from the mains?

i just started doing timelapse, for battery swaps expect to miss a frame or two if you doing 10-15secs.
been using a a55 which will go through batteries quickly. using a 10quid remote off ebay :)
