Time machine on Mac

Can you explain what you're trying to achieve or why you're about to use TM with multiple disks? There may be a better/easier solution.

I have a Macbook pro with 120Gig and and external 320 Gig small hard drive, I use the Time machine to back both of these up regularly to an external 500Gig hard drive at home.

I am worried that in the event of a fire or a burglary I could lose the original and the backup.

I take my laptop and 320 gig drive to work every day, so I was thinking about buying another large capacity hard drive to leave at work and backup my Mac and 320Gig data drive onto.

This would give me a backup in the office and a backup at home. I would rather use the time machine as I think it is such an easy bit of software and a joy to use but was wondering if it could be used on two seperate external HDs.
 
Alternative solution - Keep the new 500Gb drive at work. Once a week, take your 500gb time machine drive in with you and use SuperDuper/CarbonCopyCloner/Disk Tool etc... to clone it onto the one at work. You then have an exact copy of your time machine backups, rather than two sets (of possibly quite different) time machine backups.

The thread I posted earlier show how paranoid people can get about backing up, but I think this should stand you in good stead.
 
if your is connected through firewire, or network attached, its much much faster than USB...I used superduper to clone my mbp hdd before swapping it with a 320g 7200r drive, usb was the only option at the time. after an eon had passed it had done its thing, 100% reliable but took a while! lesson learned: use fw or NAS!

as for original Q yes you can use different drives as time machine back ups, I believe it recognises which drive is attached as well so when either one is plugged in it carrys on backing up where it left off
