time to get flickr?

Yep you can there is a Rrivicy setting you can set to:
You only
Your Family
Your Friends

Should think you would be able to link them.

You can have 200 free photos on Flickr then you have to go pro.

Sort of, you can upload as many as you want but only the most recent 200 will show. If you turn pro, they all become visible again.

It's the lack of a sensible URL on Flickr that I find most irritating. I use a TinyURL for my base on Photobucket and just add /foldername/IMGxxxx.jpg which makes life so much easier than something like farm5.static.flickr.com/4014/4324078834_ac81e92c92_o.jpg

I'm almost half used up on my photobucket :( and I don't want to go pro.....

Set up a 2nd PB account using a different email address during registration Nattelie. I don't know what your current PB account name is, but just have the second one the same as the first albeit with ''-02'' on the end of it

Was thinking of joining flickr, but was wondering can I set it to private so that people can't search my images but I can post them somewhere with a link, like with photobucket?

Flickr's Community Guidelines (which you have to agree abide by to to comply with their Terms of Service) suggest you shouldn't do that - the concept of the site is to share you photos with other Flickr members and not to be purely a photo hosting site like photobucket.

http://www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne

Flickr said:
Don’t use your account to host web graphics like logos and banners.

Your account will be terminated if we find you using it to host graphic elements of web page designs, icons, smilies, buddy icons, forum avatars, badges, and other non-photographic elements on external web sites.

Do link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere.

The Flickr service makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr to outside web sites. However, pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr.

Though it doesn't explicitly say that the linked Flickr page must be publicly viewable, so you may still be within their terms of use if provided you include the link, even if it effectively goes nowhere.

I've yet to hear of anyone I know having their Flickr account suspended because they didn't strictly observe the second of the terms I've quoted, however.

There is an option to hide your photo from searches*, but still keep it viewable, if it's specifically searching that is your problem.

edit: * I'm not sure if this signals web search engines like Google not to index the page in addition to Flickr's own public search facility.

That's how I got my Pro account... Even if I ditch BT, I'll quite happily pay the £16 a year. :)

Si

I switched from BT to Sky over a year ago and still have my Pro account. Probably because I keep my BT email address active.

Paul

I've got 2 photobucket accounts, just use another email address, but flickr's the way to go, my pro account is only 15 per year.

Free if your ISP is BT

Bt/Yahoo customer here, but cannot find any link for free pro upgrade so far just the link to credit card payment.

Do you have a link?
Apologies if I've derailed this thread.:rules:

Just this minute renewed my flickr pro account, £30.44 for two years.

Natt, how many photos have you got on you PB? I've been using PB (as well as flickr) for about 4 years and have loads of photos on there and haven't even hit 10% capacity yet.

honestly? I really don't know, I'd guess about 600ish but it's about 50% atm  I have some at quite big sizes though. Been using it about same length of time as you. Have a couple of videos too

None of the images on mine are bigger than 800 pixels as I only use it for forum postings so that could explain it.

Ah, that's good news... Certainly something to bear in mind for the future.
Thanks Paul. :)

If you sign up to a Flickr account using your @btinernet.com email address, it should automatically give you a pro account... Unless something's changed recently.

For some reason I have never fancied the idea of flickr..
Really dont know why though.
May look into using the btinternet free pro account though. Sure the gallery space will run out on TP soon. And heard flickr is better than PB.

Flickr is excellent .... for what it costs, what's the problem? Just do it, get a pro account and get involved .. I have almost 80,000 views and not yet 12 months on Flickr ... for about £18 a year it's a no brainer .... Do it!

:plusone:

It wouldn't be difficult to have something like /*username*/*phototitle.jpg* instead of the alphanumeric rubbish they use. I know they host billions of images and need the high number of file name possibilities but come on. If you don't want to use the social networking side then why not look into smugmug as well?

Don't think you can upgrade your current Flickr to make use of the free Flickr Pro from BT. You might need to start a new Flickr account using your main BT email address. That's what I had to do when I found out I was entitled to a free Pro account.

After using PB for years, I've finally moved over to pix.ie.

Definitely finding it better in terms of quality and sharpness on hosted pics than PB . . . and completely free with no upload limit (that I've been able to find anyway)

Not sure how it compares to Flikr having never used it, but very happy with it at the moment. If you don't want to pay for a Flikr pro account Nat, Pix.ie is definitely worth a look.
