Timelapse movement - Timelapse rail project

that looks really good and promissing. what are you planning to use to controll it?

Sadly it's nothing too clever, at least not at the moment. It's a 240v motor I've got on it, so I am just using a simple forward reverse switch, with an e-stop. It has limit switches at each end to stop it destroying itself too. I finished fitting it all together today, forgot to get a photo (well I managed a snapchat, not much use though!). Looking quite industrial now with the limit switches and wiring box!

Should have it wired up and running Monday, quite basic though, constant speed drive. Hoping to buy a basic speed controller to use on it, and long term is to fit a stepper motor and logic board for shoot-move-shoot operation.

Yep, start shooting, i bet you will find something interesting... possibilities are endless :)

could use a dolly or a egg timer ive seen people using egg timers which is a pretty good idea and im going to try it with mine next my camcorder has time lapse option already on it so i dont need to post edit photos it can also film stop motion animation which is pretty cool too i use a panasonic w570 such a great camera works really well
this video i filmed over 2 weeks each day a couple of hours which equals to 2 to 3 mins per clip

Really enjoyed that Harry, a well made film with a fascinating subject. A good result from your construction work.

I thought about making a slider for a while now. I have noticed that manufacturered sliders have got more expensive, so jas the build and types.
I was just going to use a slider for just videoing. Then a mate purchased an egg timer device for his GoPro hero 5.
So i thought why not build a slider which i could attach a motor a pully if i want time lapse movement. Oh boy the project just got very problematic. With motors, rails, controlling movement etc !
So then I i thought i just buy one, then I realised why I was building one instead !

The rail itself is the simplest part of the project. It's then you come to the motion control, programming and motors.

For video, something that just moves backwards and forwards is adequate, so long as you don't want to record the sound out of the camera (even a lot of motion control systems struggle in this department with motor noise). But if you want to shoot time-lapse with the shoot-move-shoot system, especially required to drag the shutter speed longer, then you're probably going to be best off buying, unless you have specialist knowledge of programming and building computer systems.

I have the Syrp Genie, which similar to the system you're thinking of. Basically one motor which sits underneath the camera and drags itself along a piece of rope. It's not a brilliant system as it struggles with most inclines over around 10-15 degrees.

I've since gone and spent a load of money upgrading to a Dynamic Perception Stage One/Sapphire Pro rig, and really questioning why I didn't just spend that bit more over the Syrp in the first place.
