ugh whats the point...

Anyway, I changed over to tiscali from BT as they offered a better deal, free anytime calls, free line rental, free internation call, 8mb unlimited broadband for 19.99

Well, in my area the line can handle 4.5 (now its 5mb) with BT we were getting 4.5 most of the time. Only really ever dropped to 3.5.

After moving to tiscali we got 2mb. No more, never any more, nothing over 2mb.
So I called over and over and they said that BT only give them 2mb to use. So how come I was promised 4.5...
Well, after more calls they said they would work on it and said wait 10 days for the change. I waited and still nothing. They called me and asked if it was better, I said nope.
Well they called again a few days ago and said it was because we were on the up to 8mb and if we lowered to 4mb it would be a lot faster and 12.99
I know thats crazy huh, I couldnt understand it. But much to my amazement the speed went up to 3.5mb which to be honest isnt all that bad.

Well tonight I got a call from them asking me if I wanted to go through with the change down to 4mb, I was going to say fine although we should get 5 now. Then they told me that we wouldnt have the anytime calls, only weekend. Which was pretty rubbish since I only thought they would lower the max speed and magically fix the connection by doing so.

We after a little heated chat they put it back up to 8mb, of course I have no idea if I will be getting 2mbs again. Currently im only getting about 0.2mbs....

The other thing that nerks me is that they offer free line rental... but not in my area, instead I take a 25% reduction.

So why am I still paying 19.99 for something they are not giving me?


Are there any other better deals out there that offer the same thing?

I gotta wait until tomorow to complain to billing now, I bet thats why they call up at 9pm....
 
Tiscali are losers:thumbsdown:. I binned them years ago.

I'm with TalkTalk. I know they get terrible reviews (or used to). I was one of the lucky ones who got their free broadband deals about 3 years ago when they first took it out. Never had a problem. All in (line rental, all normal landline calls free, selected international calls free, broadband) 21 quid a month.
 
i'll check them out,

Im thinking virgin might be ok. they seem to have more money to throw around and its a little cheaper I think.
 
I always found Tiscali fine, and plenty of people on the net think they are great.
I moved from Tiscali to Orange as I got the free broadband deal with my phone contract, OOPS!
My BB went down once, 4 weeks I was without it, and it was me that fixed it! I had to use the net at work to find the solution which was to plug in an old router with the wrong settings (I think) to 'trick' the server into resetting. Google "orange ppp server down" if you think I'm making it up.
Most providers seem to be pretty rubbish, Demon seem to have very high customer satisfaction though.
 
I mentioned this on another thread, but I'll repeat it here. Call Tiscali up and request a MAC code, they will then offer you all sorts of deals to stay.In the end I got the 8mb package for £4.99 a month....
 
I was with nildram for a few years maybe I still am?????,I was paying £22 for a 1mb conection so I phoned them asking for my mack number and they ended up giving me best part of 5mb for £12.99 a month so im happy :) this is ok for a few months as I am allways doing speed tests :geek:. anyway I was doing a test one day as it seemed very slow and to my horror seen that Tiscali was my provider and my speed was down to less than I started with :help: so I phoned them and give them hell and now my speed is all over the place.:bang:
 
We moved to O2 recently and we've not had a probelem. Very cheap if you've got an 02 mobile contract too.

It seems that 02 is cheap, but only if you live in areas where they can give you that service. Im in the sticks so 02 offer me another package which is £22 a month instead of £7...
 
The reason you get such poor speeds with Tiscali and a lot of other providers is all to do with the equipment installed at the exchange. If Tiscali have their own gear installed the speed will be dreadful, if they're using BT's it will be much better.

Google "IPSTREAM Tiscali" and you'll find lots of info about this problem.

I went through the same thing when Tiscali bought Pipex a while back. I switched to Sky who don't any equipment installed at my exchange so I get around 6.5mb and no complaints :thumbs:

Interesting stuff, anyway to find out if they have stuff installed at my exchange?
 
I've been with Tiscali for about 4 years,upgraded to the full package a while back,(upto 8 megs...currently about 6,free calls and line rental)
Haven't had any problems,couple of hiccups perhaps but overall,I'm happy
..should now be a few pence cheaper too with the VAT cut
If I ask for my MAC ,do you think I could get a wireless router off them ?:p

I pay less than £20 for line rental and up to 8mbps soon to be upgraded to 24. And my calls are free all week as a reward for taking four services.

I hate suppliers that make a huge deal about giving you free this and free that. They're not free - they are inclusive and you're paying for them. It's the same with inclusive minutes on mobile contracts. They're not free! They are paid for inclusive minutes whether you use them or not.

Have to say mate, after 10 years in the ISP business that statement is pretty wide of the mark......

It's not who's or even what equipment is installed at an exchange, it's dependant on the aggregation/contention (how many people share the bandwidth). These days Tiscali is pretty much a business only ISP, they sold their consumer business to somebody (can't remember who).

Sky on the other hand acquired the Easynet Network which is far less contended (or it was when I worked there). BT are not the only people that can deliver "decent" broadband to your door, in fact I'd go out of my way not to use them.

AIUI providers using LLU and therefore datastream only have a 2mbit connection at the exchange whereas BT has 155mbit. So yes contention is the cause but it gets there a lot quicker on datastream than it does with IPStream. In theory there shouldn't be any difference but the theory doesn't include greed and the bottom line of the ISP :(

Also, AFAIK Tiscali still haven't sold their broadband business, I'm sure there were reports about talks with Sky last month???

To expand on what I said in my first post. When, as a Pipex customer, I was switched to Tiscali at the exchange I dropped from 6.5 to 2 with the same line, same router, etc. The only thing that changed was that I'd gone from Pipex IPStream to Tiscali Data stream and so I, along with thousands of other Pipex customers left as fast as we could get the mac codes.

Getting your line rental included in the price seems to be dependant on your location, not sure why..?
