Yes
I've been a Windows user now for many years, since the days of Windows 3.0 in fact. I use it at home and at work, and whilst I don't mind Windows, I can't say that I enjoy the experience

I am an IT lecturer specialising in networking and security. From day one I always found myself criticizing Apple and their operating system, just because I suppose it was something I didn't understand. I'd make flippant comments in lectures about them being arty, pretty computers for those designer types.

Anyway, when the Iphone first came I out I was intrigued. It was the must have gadget - and I did, have it that is. I fell in love with the navigation, the simplicity and the design. Surely Apple can't be THAT bad?

A few months ago work was clearing out some labs ready for some new Macs they had coming in. After speaking to the bloke in charge of all things IT I managed to acquire two G5s both with 23" HD Cinema Displays, keyboards, mice.

I was told they were old and not to expect too much out of them!

For visual aids and for operating system comparisons, I ordered a couple of Macbooks for the learners to play with, and found I also liked the operating system - quite intuitive and also enjoyable to use!

Then I remembered, I'd got two G5s sat in my spare room at home still, gathering dust.

Over the past few days I've been reinstalling them and playing with them and they are a hell of a lot faster than I expected! Both Dual Core 2Ghz with 2GB of RAM.

I understand that Microsoft have released Office, I can still use Photoshop and Dreamweaver (essentials!)

Can I do it? Can I make the switch to a Mac and replace my PC at home?

So back to my initial question:

To Mac or not to Mac that is the question!

IF you decide against it I will take the G5's off your hands as they are cluttering up you spare room....

Its a no brainer.... do it..
:D:D

Nothing personal, but I'm most likely going to close this thread before sun down.
there are lots of these type threads and they always end in a mac fan boy, vs pc fan boy flame war.
I live in hope that there will be a first thread that doesnt end this way, but its not very likely.

Have a browse of this section and you'll see what i mean.

The simple answer to your question, is to use which ever one you prefer.

To Mac or not to Mac that is the question!

This question has been debated in many threads already. Use the search function to find them or just look for any of the locked threads in here ;) If you are too lazy to look - here is a brief synopsis:

Neither system is perfect
Try both and buy the one that works best for you
Enjoy your new toy

Simples :)

(And if you do buy a Mac, be prepared for Niel_g calling you a fanboy :) He can't help himself but means no harm :p)

I was lead in to the mac camp by the iPhone and after using PC's and all MS operating systems from DOS 2 onward I can HIGHLY recommend the switch. As you say Office and PS are available and besides you can run any Windows software that isn't available for Mac OS in Bootcamp or VM anyway!

Ok, that's that settled, you can close it now Gary :D

Ah right, didn't realise, sorry.

I didn't realise people got so hot headed over an operating system.

Last thing I want to do is cause any arguments or upsets.

Sorry :(

For what it is worth and before the thread gets Gary'd - I was like you, windows since 95 and also taught beginners technicians stuff at college briefly a back in 2004. In October I went and bought myself a s/h imac for absolute curiosity value, to see if they really were all they are cracked up to be.

The answer is yes, pretty much, although that doesn't make them problem free, but they are pretty good.

Generally I have found my mac is about half the spec in terms of ram, processor, etc as my pc, but runs at an almost identical speed in real life terms.

I now run both side by side - I still have laptop and desktop windows machines and still love them and use them a lot, but my main desktop usage is now on the mac.

I'm not sure I could get rid of the PC completely, I'd still need to keep a PC for some of the stuff I do for work.

My next problem is trying to find a place for the Mac to sit as it's too large to fit in the gap under my desk.

Hacksaw anyone? :)

Sell both any buy an iMac?

I think a lot of the mac bashing that goes on in forums is by people who haven't owned one or used the OS for any length of time. I know lots of people who have switch from Windows to Mac OS and wouldn't go back. I know none that have switched and then switched back (although I dare say they are out there somewhere).

 get an imac.... the general lack of cables and NO BIG BOX is like a breath of fresh air! Although the absolute macaholics will say the power mac is the best. ;)

...and thankyou Nigel, coffee on me later

its not the mac bashing that is a problem, its the mac and/or the pc fanboys that can't see past the end of their own noses and refuse to accept that both systems have their uses and pros and cons.

Ooooh, now there's a plan!

No huge base unit to contend with.

So far I've got two G5s for free, any one want to offer me a 27" iMac?

Please.......Pretty please?

LOL

How many people do you know that have migrated from mac to microshaft?

There. All possible questions answered.

:simples:

Criticising something does not have to be labelled "mac bashing" that's just being pejorative and is the sort of thing that leads to threads being "Gary'd". Some of us have valid reasons to prefer PC's over Mac's and are entitled to that view as you are to your own.

Instead of arguing about semantics why don't you offer the gentleman some advice as to why he should stick with his PC?

Thanks Lemming, my plan is to drag it over to my desk today, transfer all the data I think I'll need from my PC and give it a go.

It's a scary concept, I never realised how much I relied on my computer, how much data I have, and scarily, how much data ISN'T backed up!!

Still yet to have any offers for a free 27" iMac.....anyone? :)
