Togger robbed at World Cup

Unfortunately SA has a bad rep for this sort of thing and with the world cup on I wouldn't be taking my camera with me...

Damn... he must be gutted.

One thing though... the forum is the BRITISH Journal of Photography and the bloke was from Portugal so why was the equipment worth more than $35000 and not £24000 or €29000 ?

I guess big numbers look more impressive.

Feel sorry for him, and anyone else who suffers this misfortune at the WC2010 :(

I think he may be a little bit more than gutted , as someone said earlier SA is known for that kind of behaviour anyway.

At least he's alive - a lot of the people they car-jack / rob / mug aren't so lucky.

It is actual legal to have flame throwers as protection against car-jacking in SA

The US dollar is more widely used when it comes to showing prices worldwide everything trades in dollars.

Gutted for the guy but SA is well known as a rough place to go.

Feel sorry for the bloke. Just a shame peoples views of the country are so badly distorted by the British media.

Distorted? I have 9 friends who have moved here from SA. Not one wants to return to their homeland because of the lawlessness and corruption. I have to listen to them when they have Bri and go on about the bad old days........

A colleague just moved back to Jo'burg because she was home
sick. Moved entire family back. What's your point?

Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow. A city
of organised crime with one of the highest rates of
knife crime in Europe. I can bet the media won't be covering that.

The high crime rate in SA was one of the main reasons I moved from there to here 10 years ago. Various of my friends and family have been victims of armed holdups, thankfully all without personal injury, and I had my house and car burgled with monotonous regularity while I lived there. The high crime rate is a very real problem in SA.

It will be now that the eyes of the world are focused on SA that we will hear about these incidents. At other times they usually go unreported, even locally, because it happens so often.

And Daryl, a SA BBq is called a "braai" :D

I think the story came from Associated Press...which is obviously an American agency, hence the US $ values.

Sad to say that this probably won't be the only report of it's kind coming out of SA during the World Cup.

Nope, there's already reports on twitter from the guys out there about pickpocketing and theft even on the organised trips with the teams. Brazil went to Tanzania on Tuesday and reports of at least 4 togs having various bits of kit nicked and being pickpocketed are about.

Does make you wonder about the mentality of FIFA when they give a massive sporting event to a nation that barely had enough free cash to build stadiums, let alone organise security for the worlds media, players, fans, VIPs etc.

Like Mike, I too moved here as a result of the crime. I am not one of those who put SA all the time who keeps reminiscing about the crime there, in fact I promote SA alot. It is indeed a beautiful country with mostly beautiful, and very friendly people.

HOWEVER, crime is a huge problem...and alot of it is very under-reported even in SA. As an ex-police officer from there I can assure you there is a huge disparity in what is actually reported and what actually occurs. Crime stats are skewered, even right down to individual police stations.

But, like all countries..if you keep your wits about you then things should be just fine. I do know alot of people who have visited and had an amazing time there.

Further to the link I posted..there are now reports that the robbery occured when gunmen broke into the chalet and ordered the togger to lie down. That sadly is the problem in SA..the crime is even more intrusive. One could almost understand if the togger was on the street, but being in a chalet believing he was secure adds another dimension. One of too many house robberies sadly.

I too get homesick, not enough to move back home though. And no, I don't blow Vuvuzelas!
