Okay well i got my photography exam and im pretty stumped on what topic to pick. I quite like photographing people and working within a studio environment. My choices are;

Approaches to landscape
Mixed media
Ways of seeing
Colour
Natural form
Viewpoint
New realities
Images within images.

Im thinking Mixed media, but do you think this is worth the hassle of printing on fabrics and other materials? I dont know, just after some advice, what would you do?

I would have thought either "ways of seeing" or natural form" would best fit with your interests, but a few of the others could be manipulated to fit too, I suppose...

TBH I would go with 'what I wanted my work to be'. Its your work and you should guide it. As a photographer/artist/whatever.....

1. Don't ask what your work should be,
2. Don't apologise for it, and
3. Always listen to criticism and learn (but ultimately do your own thing).

I know its not the answer you were looking for but only you can answer your own question because your work has to come from yourself. If not you're just another sheep. :)

Id go for what your best at, your after a good mark so thats the most important even if you dont enjoy it as much.

what would you do?

my immediate reaction is what a load of pretentious tripe half of them are.

Subjects like that inevitably mean you will be marked based on your interpretation of such gibberish and not on your ability as a photographer.

What's wrong with a straight forward subject title and then assessing your photographic interpretation of that rather than adding in an extra layer of obfuscation.

I'm sure lot's will disagree with me but ...

Good luck - and I'd suggest one of the more straight forward subjects and then focus on how to present that effectively

Rant over!

natural form seems to have the widest interprtation from my point of view

as this could be a good one to start with

No thankyou that really helped me actually.
I probably will stick to doing Mixed mediums, as i can photograph whatever i want, and just need to focus on the actual presentation of the image.

Thanks for all your advice.

Completely agree.

Whilst I agree that there is an element of pretentiousness about these options, they are designed to be broad enough to allow creative flexibility as well as offer a starting point for those students who claim 'I don't know where to begin'. The majority of these titles could be interpreted with a people theme and could lend themselves to a studio setting; I agree with the advice of exploring where your strengths lie but might also advise you to look at what you did for AS and where you might develop or move away from what might be considered a safe option. What does your exam criteria state? You might also want to think about what you intend to do after A Levels - if it is to continue studying Photography then you will want to think about having a broad portfolio of work.

My last word on the thread would be, if you are really stumped either do a google image search of these titles, or a key word search through sites like Flickr or deviantART - these might throw up some inspiring ideas.

Cheers for now

Spooky

PS - which exam board are you doing?

PS - which exam board are you doing?

Im doing AQA
Atm im doing a third year, but im feeling doing some work experience in fashion during this year, and maybe going to uni after that to either to something in fashion (if i enjoy the experience i may get), or psychology, maybe photography if i dont get the grades.

Yeah i have some good ideas for mixed media and theres no real critera for what to photograph, so i have a lot of leeway there. And for the exam i have an idea of what to fill my time with there, and i did want to photograph using more film cameras, as i havnt done this for years.
