As the title says I'm torn between getting a Vivitar 500mm f/8 Mirror LENS & macro(1:2.7) for SONY or going for a Minolta AF 50mm F 1.7 Sony Alpha

I know they both are used for different things but I just cant make up my mind which to go for. I know the 50mm is better for closer work and taking portrait shots and the 500mm is better for long distance shots... The trouble is I haven't found my forta in photography yet as I like taking photos of everything. Heres a link to show some of my favorites so far.....

looking through them now seem to be more close up shots.....so maybe I should get a 50mm . Help Please. :bang::bang::bang::shrug::shrug:

Mirror lenses are only slightly higher in the optical pecking order than a bogroll cyclinder with a magnifying glass on the end.

dont buy mirror lenses, there is no real use for them, i think they are used for astrophotography but apart from that you might aswell make it into a huge flask. go for the 50mm its short and sweet and it's a lens i've never regretted getting however i would recommend going for the more expensive 50mm f1.4 because when you get that prime addiction you'll want the wider lens.

+1 for the mirror lens. they are terrible !

p.s. OP - could it be that i've seen some of the pics in pistonheads ?

The 50 f1.7 is a nice little lens, provides both low light and shallow DOF options.
As mastertrinity says the 50 1.4 is better, but is priced accordingly (but still not that expensive).

I haven't used one of the mirror lenses, but as you can see from the above replies they are generally not well regarded.
The possible exception is the Sony (or Minolta) 500 f8, which I've certainly seen some nice results from. It also has the benefit of AF, which I believe is unique amongst mirror lenses.

My choice would be (well, was in fact, as I own one) the 50 f1.7.

get the 50mm f1.7 great little lens .i had a mirror lens .came with a deal off ebay .It went back on ebay the same evening ..
Use my 50mm for gigs in low light situations ,i have no complaints .take a look at the link below some of the 6 shots were taken with the 50mm .

ps the shots taken with the 50mm are all except the last one

Thank you all for making up my mind. I'm now looking at getting a 50mm lens off ebay. I bidding on one last night but lost at the last minute. :'(:'(

Whats the problem? Thats true is it not?

As mentioned above, it's actually just a crop not an increase in focal length, but perhaps as relevant here is that it applies to the 500mm as well (which will have the FOV of a 750mm)

technically there is increase in focal length, yes the lens focal length stays the same but it is x, as on a full frame camera you would still need a 750mm lens to give you the same picture(field of view)
as you would on a crop sensor, regardless of the crop factor.
Hence why most wildlife togs use crop sensors.

Cheers all for you advice... I missed out on a few 50mm lens on ebay. I bought am photographer this month and there are some shop sites in the back and I've found them to be cheaper than ebay. FFordes for one. I just bought a 100-300mm minolta lens from them for £49 and its Wicked quality
