Hello!

I've been looking at the non VR Nikon 70-300 Lens and you can get them for £90. Would it be worth trading in my Tamron?

I can't find a review of the non VR Nikon they are all of the VR version and say how fantastic it is.

I love the range of my Tamron but at 300mm its difficult combating the soft!

Any opinions would be great!

If you are talking about the AF-G Nikon, its not too bad but I doubt you'll see a tangible improvement over the Tamron.

Are you sure the softness isn't down to user shake or technique rather than the lens?

I use a tripod or Monopod with the Tamron. Shots that I took at 200mm with my Nikon 55-200 at the same settings as the Tamron looked much sharper before I dropped it that is!

I believe it is the AF-G. It looks pretty much identical but without the VR. So theres a lot of other features that differ from the newer 70-300 then?

i've used one of the AF-G 70-300's & it is sharper than the Sigma APO70-300 i also have.
i kinda got mine by default as the Mrs bought it on ebay then found it wouldn't AF on her D40x so i lent her my 55-200VR & i got the 70-300 in exchange. not sure i did too well out of that :bonk:
however. i used it at Farnborough airshow a few weeks ago & got some pretty good pics of the red arrows even handheld at 300mm
downside is when i shot darker grey planes against the sky there was horrendous purple fringing (not with red arrows pics ***) that relegated most shots to the bin :gag:
also the colours seemed a tad muted but you could bring them back up in post;)
for the money its a decent bit of extra reach but if you want sharp then you're gonna need a tripod

Thanks for the reply Tirpitz :)

Thats interesting to know its sharper than the Sigma. What settings were you using handheld?

i'll have to go back & check. i know i tried keeping the shutter speed high enough to try to avoid any shake.

Flickr set using that lens here- http://www.flickr.com/photos/sh0wtime/sets/72157624529707545/

Thank you again for the reply!! Thats a fantastic pic :)

I will have a look through your flickr pics!

You've got some good pics there :D I'm feeling myself getting pulled towards one!

Any other thoughts?

well, if price is the controlling factor at the moment then it seems the Nikkor is possibly the best option :)
But, everybody says the 70-300VR is a totally different lens that is not only stabilised but also optically far superior so it might be worth saving the pennies  it all depends how much shooting you do at the long end & how important good results are to you
yes i got some reasonable aircraft pics but i've not tested that lens on a long shot with lots of detail! it might be rubbish
personally i'm saving for a 70-200f/2.8 as after using one i know i need one in my life! absolutely stunning lens :naughty:
