Train photography?

Yes
I travel from Chester to Manchester to Chester every day and there are loads of train tracks with weeds growing all over them and trains that look like they're from the middle ages, and I was just wandering if there are there rules in place for taking photos of these run down trains and tracks? I think they'd make some quite nice photos. So are you allowed to stand on the track / beside the track / anything else? Or is all this strictly prohibited because it's all the property of Nothern Rail?

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

It is a criminal offense to trespass on the railway...punishable by a £2000 fine! The only areas you are allowed on rail property are station platforms, and authorised crossing points (which are quite frequent on the Liverpool - Manchester line).

Best avoided really!

I agree that the railway would make a great subject, but I suspect it would be very difficult to get decent access to the tracks other than from stations and near by roads etc.

I think you will be confronted with an insurmountable load of health and safety problems. Which is a terrible shame because it could be a great project.

Ah... What are the odds that I could sell my pics for £2000? :D

Then you have to make up with a few extra ££s on top of that for the inconvenience of being rogered by the polices interal search probe when you're arrested under the terrorism laws

If it is still an operational railway you will not get permission to go on to it no matter how lightly used it is.

Correct.

You need a lot of safety-related training before you're allowed on operational railways, and it's policed very tightly. And with good reason too. It's an incredibly dangerous environment.
