Travelling with a digital?

Hi - I joined this forum quite a while back but apart from the introductory message haven't posted anything until now. But at last I have a question!

I'm no stranger to photography, having been taking pictures since the sixties. But I'm having to re-learn a lot because I got tired of struggling to find film, chemicals, paper etc, and have just bought a digital SLR, A Nikon D7000 and two AF-S lenses.

In the past I had issues with film being fogged by airport X-ray machines and as a result always carried exposed film on my person rather than in my baggage. But I'm wondering if there are any problems with a digital camera; is there any chance of electronics, in particular the sensor, being affected by X-ray machines? Do you guys let your kit go through the machine or do you kick up a fuss and have it hand-searched?

no issues at all....
I'm actually out on hols with my SLR now which came out in hand luggage.
This year I've done 39 flights so far (I know :( ) and on almost all of them I've had a digi camera with me, either a compact or my SLR.

I am quite regularly flying and both my Compact Kodak and my Olympus DSLR both go through the Xray machine with no issues.

Cheers,
Ste

Your DSLR will be fine. Just put it through the X-Ray scanner with everything else.

Peru, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, North America, Egypt, all with hand luggage full of various camera kit and not once been stopped.

Modern airport X-ray scanners are far lower powered than they used to be and I've never read of any sensors being damaged by them. IIRC, some SanDisk cards specifically state they are x-ray safe. Even film can go through several times, although I might be a bit wary with high ISO emulsions. I know that 400 ISO can go through several times with no problem.

I have had my camera bag manually checked after the scan twice. Once, they swabbed every piece of kit in there for explosives and the other, it was just a manual check. I would never kick up a fuss at any security check, especially at an airport, since I'm alergic to the snap of rubber gloves!
