I normally set the timer when using a tripod (Manfrotto 055XPROB RC322) for landscapes because of the movement that can be induced just by the slight pressure of your finger on the button.

Yesterday I had the 300mm attached to the 50d and aimed at a guillemot sitting on a cliff face, the tripod was resting on rock, I decided to set it to live view plus electronic zoom and manually focus it to get it as sharp as possible as it would still need a big crop to make it a decent pic.

What amazed me was the movement that showed up on the lcd screen while setting the focus on live view, the slightest touch or even wind had a noticeable effect!,

I used to have a grip attached and one the reasons I decided to sell my grip was because you could actually see the movement between the grip and the body when attached to the tripod. I actually bought and sold a grip twice before deciding they were not for me.

Oh and if you are wondering if I got the shot, no I did not as it flew away before I was set up.........memo to myself, take a normal shot first and then faff about in the live mode:bonk:.

just wondering if you were using a 300mm and gripped 50D, shouldn't the lens tripod ring be attached to the tripod plate and not the grip/camera thread?

I appreciate there might be someone stupid enough not to use the tripod collar Drew but not me:D, as I said in the post I no longer use a grip and bought and sold one twice, I was just mentioning the movement between it and the body when on the tripod.

Sorry if the title confused you.

sounds silly but was the tripod ring locked down? I've been known to forgeth that :D

If that is the 2 or three grub screws, yes they are permanently screwed in, the plate is always locked, is there another lock:thinking:............goes out to car to check the tripod.:D

Edit, checked, nothing else that I can see to lock:)
