I normally set the timer when using a tripod (Manfrotto 055XPROB RC322) for landscapes because of the movement that can be induced just by the slight pressure of your finger on the button.
Yesterday I had the 300mm attached to the 50d and aimed at a guillemot sitting on a cliff face, the tripod was resting on rock, I decided to set it to live view plus electronic zoom and manually focus it to get it as sharp as possible as it would still need a big crop to make it a decent pic.
What amazed me was the movement that showed up on the lcd screen while setting the focus on live view, the slightest touch or even wind had a noticeable effect!,
I used to have a grip attached and one the reasons I decided to sell my grip was because you could actually see the movement between the grip and the body when attached to the tripod. I actually bought and sold a grip twice before deciding they were not for me.
Oh and if you are wondering if I got the shot, no I did not as it flew away before I was set up.........memo to myself, take a normal shot first and then faff about in the live mode:bonk:.
