tripod advice

:welcome: to TP

The 055 legs are certainly much sturdier than the 190. I wouldn't hesitate to use a heavy camera/lens combo on mine. I would imagine it would be a good match for the 393, but it's not a combo I've tried.

I have the 055X PROB tripod as well. It will certainly take any weight you care to put on it.
Together with the 322 RC2 head is a formidable setup. Heaviest I have used on it is a Nikon D200 with a Sigma70-200 F2.8 macro 11 HSM lens plus a SB600 flash. Total weight around 2.7kg

Having looked up the Manfrotto site weights
Tripod is rated at 7kg max
Head rated at 5kg max

Hope this helps

Agree with the others on the 055, I've use this one for a year now and not found it lacking in any way whatsoever. Strong, sturdy, quick & easl to use. It's just about as heavy as I'm willing to carry when out landscape togging. Don't know about the head but the spec seems plenty man enough.

Another benefit the 055 enjoys is height. At 178.5cm fully extended column and 142cm fully retracted column I find that I can do most of my level ground tripod shooting around the 142 position (I'm 5' 11") therefore plenty of column adjustment available when you have to have the legs at different heights due to uneven ground, seashore rocks, slopes etc

Cheers, Dave B.

The thing you need to know most about a tripod Kaz is what it's max recommended load is, which is usually shown in the specs. Then you need to know the max load you're going to place on it which means the combined weight of your camera body, 300 2.8L, converters, and don't forget to add the weight of a flashgun and your gimbal head. You're looking for a tripod which will support that weight with a few pounds to spare on the safe side and also trying to future proof the tripod for if you get a heavier body or lens in future.

You've probably had good advice on the Manfrotto 055, it's a good sturdy tripod. Don't forget that if you want something very stable and also light, it usually means expensive! A lot of people poopoo carbon fibre and in all honesty, I don't think the weight saving is too much to worry about, but it's a lot more pleasant to handle on freezing cold days like New Years Day. ;)
