Probably a silly question, but could someone explain why you would use say a ball head over a 2/3 way head ? There seems to be lots of heads available that all look slightly different so not sure which one to choose.

Thanks

It is 100% "need" and personal choice.

For example I would not consider doing this with three way heads, just two short columns from tripods, Manfrotto hide clamps and the superb Manfrotto ball head

I do prefer gimbals more than anything else and also have one on my monopod

Though I do have two superb Giottos MH5001s, for load capacity and quality of build on my Manfrotto and here on my Unilok a better tripod by far than Benbo.

Thanks, if I wanted top use a tripod for macro use and for longish exposures of the night sky what head would you recommend?

depends what you shoot

extreme example - if you shoot video, you dont particularly want to flip the camera through 90 degrees

Very broadly...

Most people prefer a ball head. Providing the ball is a decent size and well engineered (ie tending to be a bit more expensive) they are very versatile, fast to use, and compact.

On the other hand, if you want individual control of the three movement planes, then a 3-way head gives you that. But they are slower to use, and the handles stick out awkwardly for transport.

I am an Amateur Astronomer.

Are you talking motor or not, what shots do you want, you can photograph all the constellations simply by placing your camera on a decent tripod and that does not mean expensive, thouigh look to £100, and I would use a 3 way head.

Point the camera at the constellation, a standard 50mm lens is fine for film, or say 28mm on DSLR.

400ASA, and up to 10 seconds will show minimal movement (star trails).

See the PLOUGH taken by me with this setup

I have also done a telescope review here

You will get star trails over 10 seconds with a standard lens, so anything else will require a driven mount, again £100 ish, see my telescope review with Patrick here

Look for the

SYNSCAN™ AZ GOTO COMPUTERISED ALT-AZIMUTH MOUNT & STEEL TRIPOD

on the OVL website, about £100 new now on ebay, or £160 if you look round. I have used the site below ONLY as an example, there are many others.

Ans YES you can mount a camera where the scope is.

Why have you deleted this

Its just that his comments were most appreciated, from whet I saw in my email.

Thank you, perhaps it is because as much as someone may upset me or make comments I would like to be rude about I don't thik I ever have.

Manners etc.

No worries Ade - if he wants to know why then he can as I dont have anything to hide...

Why have you deleted this

It was mainly to the reason of the "name drop at every opportunity" that Martin mentioned...

I just asked how could Martin could say that when all he done was mentioned Patrick once and linked to his website - then I noticed that the original post had been edited compared to the original quote in Martins post.. It was nothing disrespectful (which was mentioned in my original post) to either member nor to the posts made by these two...

Hence why my question was deleted as soon as...

If the mods wish to replace my original post that was deleted then please feel free to repost it if they can..

I know it was not disrespectful as I had a copy, in fact I was so very appreciative and wanted to say thank you

I removed Patricks name because it had obviously upset someone.

I will not mention any names again who I know including Brian May, his wife, Piers Sellers.... oops

I think it's quite ill mannered to trade on your association with Sir Patrick to try and boost your own fragile ego. Equally bad mannered to edit posts to try and put someone in a worse light.

Come on guys please play nicely.
And don't forget we can still read the posts that have been edited ;)

As I CLEARLY stated I edited my post because aparently being a friend of Patrick Moore upset someone so I removed the reference.

You're being deliberately obtuse about what I posted and you know it. I don't care if you believe you're a friend of Patrick
Moore, I just don't understand why the point was pertinent to the post you were making. According to your bio your occupation is being a friend of Patrick Moore. I believe you're prostituting his name in order to inflate your own esteem in the eyes of other people. THAT to me is the height of bad manners.

That wasn't aimed at anyone in particular just a polite reminder.
This thread has gone way off course now.

We hope you have had a pleasant flight with TP airways, and hope that you will fly with us again soon
Please wait until the plane reaches the terminal before leaving your seats,
and don't forget your hand luggage.
