So I have doing amateur photography for a few years now and I currently have a Canon 50D, 24-105mm and a Sigma 10-20mm for wide shots.

I am happy with the composition of most of the shots and I try to learn from the ones which have not come out so well.

One thing I am struggling with is low light.

My shots vary but most (50%+) are indoor and involve things that move, i.e. kids, animals etc.

I realise the 24-105mm only goes to F4 but I often find myself at this aperture and ISO 1600/3200 and either the shutter speed is not enough (so I get motion blur) or the image is fairly grainy.

I am contemplating an upgrade the full frame where I will be able to increase the ISO and bring up my shutter speed so I get shots with less motion blur.

The 6D is tempting but I am umming and ahhing about it as its a decent money outlay.
I love the 24-105mm as it gives me flexibility with shots.

Having tried a 30mm and 50mm prime lens, I liked the fact it could go to a lower aperture but not the flexibility of a fixed focal length, especially with targets that move, like kids.

Ramble over.

Presumably the 6D would be the most suitable upgrade?

All things being equal full frame will always give you better low light performance than a crop will. From what I have seen the 6D is pretty decent.
 
if like you say you shoot indoors the 6d is in a different league to 500d high iso is as stated a lot better and a substantial upgrade as well as giving you a lot wider angle with the 24-105 only potential downside is the 10-20 wont work
 
Why not just get faster glass without going for a prime? Site you might need to lose some range without paying megabucks but what about an f2.8 17-50 or similar? I think I'm right in saying with the FF camera you'll lose some range if you can still use your existing lenses anyway.
 
I am happy to lose the range a little, I know the 24-105mm will become something like a 15-65mm (ish) which will probably be a little better anyway.
15mm at the wide end will probably be fine, I will sell the 50D and the 10-20mm Sigma to put towards the upgrade.
 
Your 24-105 will be a true 24-105 on a full frame. In fact it's still a 24-105 on your 50d it just gives the field of view of a longer lens due to the crop factor.

personally I would go for it if u have the 24 105 as u have a reasonable lens to start with as mentioned a lens upgrade is viable but to me if you have a full frame itch in the future a 17-55 will go the same way as your 10-20 .........
 
The 6D is a cracking camera with superb low light performance. You can pump the ISO up a long way before noise becomes noticeable. Combined with the 24-105 you have a great combination. I too like the flexibility of zoom lenses and find fixed lenses limiting especially for moving objects.

As has already been mentioned no EF-S lenses will work on FF cameras so unless you keep your 50D the 10-20 will be surplus.
 
I keep ummin and ahhing as well although I am looking to move from a 70D, which I like very much, and can't really justify having both. But the price is very attractive at the moment with double discount for the next week or so and might mean you can keep the 50D.

That's what Camera World and Park are saying - 2 x £100 cashback making the body only price £919.00, you have to stump up £1119 upfront and then claim the money back.

Have you considered improving the lighting for your indoor shots? It's usually not hard to increase the illumination by at least a factor of four (two stops) by fitting the highest power light bulbs and adding an extra light or two for the dimmest corners.

Thanks for your reply, most of my shots are at family or friend events so lighting is not normally something I can control. I like spur of the moment shots so having to mess with lighting is not something I am keen on.
 
Indeed, would bounce flash not help?

Always handy to have a decent flash and potentially more useful than a new body.

Ahh I see, I have always bought second hand, mainly off this forum. You can get the 6d for £650-£750 second hand and would rather do that. Bodies always lose money and new ones lose the most. At least with something second hand I have options if I decide it's not for me.

Very true, I do have a flash but it's not always convenient and people at family or friend events tend to shy away from flashing lights so would prefer more natural shots.

Agree with this - if it's what you want, go for it. The 6D is a great body and I'm rally pleased I went FF (bank balance wasn't though :) )
 
I take it you don't use off camera flash at all indoors ?
Another option might be to take a look at the 7D MK II I have heard some good things about it ?

A good valid point if you don't want to use flash there are one or two good LED options available ?
