Build a new NAS from your old PC

Well I have been doing a tip a day for the Mac for more than six months and I have today uploaded 9 tips which show you how to set up an old computer as a proper NAS.

I have done this extra thread so that those running Windows might be able to benefit from it too.

Any further updates and I will let you know on this thread.

Sorry to criticize, but what's the point in using windows as a NAS box? Why not just use FreeNAS?
 
OK, very confused.. the Windows users link takes me to the latest post in the thread ???

Should it point at tip #192 or something specific for Windows?

Yes it should jump straight to tip 192, I will fix the link later but for the moment just scroll up to that tip.
 
I ended up about 5 pages away from tip 192 :lol: gotonewpost in the link will take folks to the last post THEY have seen in the thread - or to put it another way, chocolate teapot :(
 
This is a good project, however, as with all things, please do bear in mind the costs of electricity and powering an always on computer... napkin estimates reckon around £100 a year, as a _very_ minimum... might be cheaper to buy a low power NAS box after all, though you obviously don't get the learning experience, customisation, advanced features or ability to add n hard drives.

Yes thats a valid point BUT if you dispense with the monitor and use a low power psu, no sound card, no speakers etc etc it will reduce the electrical outlay significantly. I will stick the power meter on it and have a look what it is actually using later just for interest.

Yes it is true there would be little point in using this IF you just share 1 directory and everyone has access to it but it is a worthwhile project.
 
Anyone know how to find out the post number in order to get a direct link to a particular post ie the tip 192 post in the other thread :)

Anyway it has taken me all day to do my short and to the point introduction to freeNAS so I hope that it will be of use to people.
