Good morning,

I have been looking at hiring a Nikon lens for my D5300 which was purchased new in April this year. There is a footnote which say to make sure you are using "the most up-to-date firmware".
What does this mean and how do I check if I need to do anything?

Sorry for the noob questions.

Many thanks
Simon

Firmware is the software that's embedded into your camera to control how it operates. Every now and then the camera manufacturers issue updates, either to fix problems or to provide new functionality. Users can download the new firmware from the manufacturer's website and install it themselves. It requires no skill beyond an ability to follow simple instructions and it only takes 5 minutes.

For the D5300 you can check which version you're currently running via Menu > Setup Menu > Firmware Version. You can check the latest version, and find instructions for downloading and installing it, on the Nikon website. Just Google 'nikon d5300 firmware' and it will take you straight there.
