"USB Device Not Recognised"

Yes
My old Toshiba laptop (about 3 years old, running Vista) has suddenly started displaying this message whenever I try to attach a printer to it. The USB ports all work when I plug a card reader into them and I've tried two different printers and two different cables, without any success.

I've installed new drivers for both printers and run the troubleshooting software that comes with one of them (Canon) and it couldn't find the printer...

Anyone able to help?

restart the computer and keep fast pressing the f3 key as it powers back up, this will give you the option of
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good config
or start normally

use option 4 last known good config. Safe mode lets you run the computer but restricts what you can use but should be able to get system restore via that

It's F8

definately sounds driver related.. did you remove the old driver and disconnect the printer before trying to reinstall?

There wasn't a driver installed for the Canon one, however when I plugged it in the first time the computer recognised it right up until I tried to print, then it came up as "offline". I downloaded a driver from the Canon site and installed it (without the printer connected), but it still won't recognise it.

The other (Epson) printer had been in use with computer and it just suddenly stopped working. I've downloaded and installed new drivers for that too.

I'll give that a try and see what happens......

Also try THIS, worked for me!

Now I would go to the printers and delete any printers showing.

then go to CP and uninstall any and all printer software.

Then clear registry of any remaining bits by searching under printer manufacturer.

Then go to device manager and delete all usb ports and reboot when they will reload. Then install software and connect printer when asked.

That was one of the first things I tried :shake:

In Device Manager I have 5x USB Universal Host Controller and 5 x USB Root Hub is that any of those or...?

on mine its f3 (windows XP )

From Microsoft
To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

That was one of the first things I tried :shake:

Just delete them all and reboot

even on XP im 99% sure its F8 to get the boot options?

see above:)

LOL where is my coffee

If the USB and the wireless is not being recognised properly then that to me points out one common factor - the motherboard.

Have you tried reinstalling the chipset drivers first of all?

I've discovered that it's an i943/940gml chipset, which appears to be like saying it's a 1.4/1.6 engined car, but we're not sure which :shake:

If you have a Vista disc, stick it in, use your Device Manager to get to your USB stuff and try and install drivers from your Vista Disc.

If no disc, backup all your data and reset your machine to factory settings again.

If that doesn't work, I have a big hammer you can borrow!

But which MODEL of computer is it (it should be something like a Toshiba Portege 1234).

Downloaded and installed a full set of new drivers, the wireless facility at least is now working, but still no printer. Since deleting all the stuff in the DM (as advised by Mark), all of the USBs now come up as unknown devices....

Hmm not sure why that is sorry:(. Any time I have had to do that it just relaods all the USB driver info and they work.:bang:

The USB drivers are part of the OS, hence my advice before.

Oh yes indeedy, I'll be off over to Comet in a wee while - it's next door to B&Q and they sell sledgehammers :D

You are only supposed to hit your lappy not the ones in comet:)

We're getting somewhere..

OK, we need to locate the drivers for the USB devices.

Start->Control Panel->System->Device Manager and select one of the unknown devices. Right click->Properties->Driver tab. Select Update Driver and see if that gets you anything.

If not, select the Details tab. In the click menu, of Property select hardware IDs. You should get something like: PCI\VEN_xxxx&DEV_yyyy. The VEN specifies the vendor, the DEV specifies the device from that vendor. Drop the VEN_xxxx&DEV_yyyy into Google and it should give you enough context as to which driver set you need.

Can you tell I've done this before ;)
