"USB Device Not Recognised"

OK, we need to locate the drivers for the USB devices.

Start->Control Panel->System->Device Manager and select one of the unknown devices. Right click->Properties->Driver tab. Select Update Driver and see if that gets you anything.

If not, select the Details tab. In the click menu, of Property select hardware IDs. You should get something like: PCI\VEN_xxxx&DEV_yyyy. The VEN specifies the vendor, the DEV specifies the device from that vendor. Drop the VEN_xxxx&DEV_yyyy into Google and it should give you enough context as to which driver set you need.

The computer has been trying to update the drivers for the last 40 minutes or so.....

Try deleting them again now you have the correct chipset driver file loaded.

Looking around, they would work if they described themselves as: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27Cx

Deleting them again might make them be recognised as the correct device. The drivers are there, it's just getting the system to recognise them.

Just trying to help ;) I've had all sorts of problems with drivers not "quite" installing correctly.

If you want me to try and help tomorrow (err today), drop me a phone number to call and time (after 11am and before 3pm) and I'll see what I can do by 'phone...

Your help is really appreciated :thumbs:

There are numerous other problems with this laptop and I reckon they're all related, so I'll keep tinkering with it until I crack it.

Next job is to replace the screen on the other one :lol:
 
A good way of figuring out what is going wrong is to try and re-install the drivers and then looking at the file: c:\WINDOWS\setupAPI.log. That should let you see what the PC thinks is happening....

The location of the SetupAPI log file has been changed.
The new location is: D:\Windows\INF

When I try entering the new address I get...

Windows cannot find D:\Windows\INF


Come to think of it, this computer doesn't have a "D" drive at all :lol:

Unless your main drive is D, that should be somewhere in C:\Windows...
