USB issues on Mac

Had a problem last weekend where my USB ports on my MacBook won't see my card reader or camera, although it kows they are there due to the light coming on on the card reader.

I have downloaded the pictures now to a windows laptop which will now not allow me to write the files to disc as it says there a problem with the file (but doesn't say what the problem is)

I've emailed them so I can now open on my Mac and have no problems opening and editing the images.

I have tried more than one card and they all do the same, so the card doesn't seem to be the issue, I have tried with card reader and direct from camera and have the same issue.

Any suggestions?? As I'm quickly running out of ideas.

have you checked to see if they mounted in disk utility?

They're not even come up listed on disk utility. So what's the next step ?

remove the usb cable, restart then it again. Change the usb cable. Check in system profiler to see what is showing on the usb bus. Make sure the write-protect tab on the usb card is not moved, sometimes they move a little when you insert the card, try getting a bent paperclip and ensuring that the write-protect tab is fully pushed the right way.
