Used 1D mkiii or new 7D

When I was agonising whether to move up from a 1D MkIIn to a MkIII or buy a 7d I came across this document.
http://iwishicouldfly.com/iwishicouldfly/journal/pdfs/Canon 7D vs 1D Mark III.pdf

I stress that I was looking at the dilemma from the viewpoint of a bird photographer and that is the viewpoint of the author as well.

It was this that made my mind up, I'm happy with the cropped shots the 7D gives me but then of course I haven't handled a MkIII.

Sorry but it's a fact, 7D's image quality can't compete with the 5DC...

"As for the pixels in the 7D being of little use on heavy cropping, the paper that I was filing for might tend to disagree with you."

I'd be interested in seeing those files, were they the ones I saw on your flickr?

Who's talking about a 5D? Go back and read the original question which was asking about a 7D v a 1DMkIII.

If you're looking at my Flickr, then the Exif's intact so you can see what I was using. The icon should have given you a hint.

There are enough of my photos floating about in the sports section to show what I am talking about.

The link jm2 posted is a revised 7D vs. 5Dc comparison for the same site as the one Momentcapture posted
http://digitalphotobuzz.com/canon-7d-iso-review
He says the one you linked to was conducted with the 7D using noise reduction.
In this revised review with NR turned off, the 7D shots are sharper and clearly show more detail on the objects.

Lol, I'm only talking about the 5Dc, since you asked for my practical experience with FF.

Strange, I couldn't see a link to your flickr from your sig a minute ago.
Also I think the Exif is actually stripped...

Yeh I just had a look, I also compared the 5Dc's file from the previous review, and the one with noise reduction off, is softer than with noise reduction on?
Hmm doesn't add up to me...

He doesn't mention NR on any of the 5Dc files. I don't think the 5Dc has in camera luminance noise reduction, if it has any NR in camera it's chroma only like my 40D.

He also changed the focus on the 7D images in the NR-on comparison (look at the ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 crops, the focus is clearly different).

In short, I don't think you can compare sharpness at all in the NR-on comparison. The NR alone makes it a bit dubious, but the focus inconsistencies make it completely irrelevant for comparing sharpness to me.

I agree, focus seems to be off, maybe due to changes in light or something fooling the 5D's AF?
Surely that reviewer isn't guilty of 'user error'? :gag:

You seem to be basing you arguments off these reviews, then when they don't add up you seem to say user error. If it isn't based on a lot of practical experience, to completely bash a camera and then compare it to one that isn't even being discussed seems irrelevant and is not helpful.

For the OP. Both will serve you very well. 1Diii has the pro body feel a lot more and will be more robust, but the 7D is a great camera too.

What gear do you currently have as this may factor in to your choice.

Many review and user experiences confirm the 7D to be softer than most other camera's, and needs more processing...

Most cameras meaning what?

In the price bracket it is well respected. I always have issue with how "Soft" things are. Pixel peeping aside, what are the differences in real world use?

Damn, I knew I should've went for that Kodak thingy.

Where have you been, if only you could have advised us years ago..

What's the difference between a 5DC and a 5Dii, in real world use?

Only one review I've seen that offered a solid comparison showed the 7D as soft.

I think it was a QC problem early in the 7D's release.
Also I think there was an issue with one version of ACR showing 7D .cr2 files as very soft, which has since been fixed.

I am at present using the 5D mkii, wonderfull camera and i intend to use it for the majority of my picture taking but for fast action sports i wanted something faster, i seem to have started a real debate here, that wasn't my intention as im sure a lot of people have valid opinions in both camps but i wouldn't like to see anyone fall out over this. (im still a bit lost as to how the 5Dc got into the mix).

thanks to everyone for their contribution

I think then my money would go 1Diii. Superior build quality pro level body. Would compliment the 5Dii nicely. Portraits would obviously be a 5D2 thing and soley sports I would put my money there as long as you can deal with the crop factor.

Thats exactly what i was thinking and what i've done

I'd go for the 1D3, I had one for a year before downgrading to a 40D. I found the 40D a step down too far so I eventualy picked up a 7D again. When the 7D hits it's superb, but I got more keepers from the 1D3. I've also now picked up a 1Ds2 which I use alongside the 7D, they compliment each other well in a FF/crop way. If I do my part well there is very little difference in IQ (apart from the obvious FF DoF and AoV differences)

Thats the way im looking at it, 1Dmkiii for speed and a little extra distance for sports and the 5Dmkii for portraits. btw what does AoV mean

It would be interesting to see comparison between the two... :coat:

Never used a 1D but the 7D is banging but then again I'm not an advanced camera user just a noob lol.

Hi Taz,
Im not that far advanced myself but have read that the 1d mkiii will fit my needs for sport, what do you find the 7D best at?
