Can anyone recommend a good book to get me started?
I want to understand more about the basic rules of photography.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson

Also Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Books 1, 2 & 3
 
Where do you start on this?, there must be so many!! If you don't have a specific area of interest it can be hard.
I would imagine that some of the older books out there are worthy of notice, and I would be cautious of any jazzy looking mainstream books, given the wow wee 'Lets Do Digital Photography' factor. The techniques stay the same digital or otherwise, and for that reason , a trip down to a decent library will pay dividends, as well as save you a few quid. Alot of the older titles stay in print - because they are so good.
 
Richard - If you are starting there are 2 books that should be essential:
Understanding Exposure - Bryan Peterson
and
The Photographers Eye - Michael Freeman

Michael Freeman also has an excellent on Exposure.

The key to imaging is capturing reflected light from objects - Exposure and capturing the images in a format that makes them of interest to others.

Everything else is second.

Whilst 'Understanding Exposure' does explain the basics of exposure you can find similar information just by searching the internet and this forum in particular.

If you really want to "understand" 'photography' "painting with light" you should look at something like 'Light, Science & Magic'.

1, 2 AND 3?

I think most people agree that the ideas are wearing very, VERY thin by the third book!?
 
I really liked Michael Freemans the Photographers Eye. It gave me some great ideas and understanding about composition and what works within a photo.
