Using flash away from camera

Hi all,

Just a quick question if you don't mind. I'm expecting my SB-600 to arrive tomorrow and just wondered how I'd go about using it off-camera. Does it come with a cord or are these available separately?

Many thanks for your advice (again)

Dave

With your D40x you can't use it off camera wireless - you can buy a Nikon SC-17 cord, I use it to go off-camera.

There is a later version of the SC-17 thats much more expensive, but the SC-17 is the same thing.

The SC-17 has been discontinued for quite a while now, it was replaced by the similar SC-28 and SC-29 models, but as you say they are much more expensive, although there is an Ebay version of the SC-28 available, for around £20-25

If you don't want it for TTL, just manual (i.e. strobist style) then just get yourself some cheap ebay triggers. Think they're around £20 now for the latest version?

HI, you can use it in slave mode and fire the on camera flash which will in turn fire the SB600. If you wind the on camera flash down, you should still be able to get shadow detail as desired.

Thanks for all the replies people. I'm hoping it arrives tomorrow so will have a play and see how I get on.

Your replies are much appreciated as usual.
