Right - after a recent convo on here I have firmly decided to buy a couple of UV filters specifically to help protect my lens' but also to help my pictures ( also going to a get a CP one at some point )....

Budget is an issue and while I would like to spend a fortune ( and could ) I am trying for now to limit my self until next year ( or bits of me may go missing while I am sleeping :suspect: )....

So..... I looked at http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-hoya-58mm-hmc-uv-c-/p1519063 how ever thats single thread and I could not use a lens cap or flower with it ( paranoia raines ).

If your on a budget & want/looking at either/both UV & a cpl have a look into these.... Hoya HRT Filter

I've not used them so cant really comment - but give Simon a bell (very helpful chappie) who owns Crooked Imaging with any questions... Like I say he is a very polite & helpful chappie..

I may go for some thing like that in the long run... for now its more stop gap I guess.

Seriously, buy *good quality* filters!
If you don't want to spend a fortune look at the Kenko ones. As far as I know they're basically Hoya filters and pretty decent.

If you do want the best... Heliopan, B+W or the top end Hoya.
Ignore the people who tell you that you shouldn't use them :) I'd rather take 10 seconds to screw a new filter on than wait two or three weeks to get a new front element fitted.

I own 2 UV filters, 1 77mm for my zooms 1 58mm for my primes, if I'm going to be working in a hazardous enviroment I use one on whichever lens I have on at the time, I am unlikely to change lenses in such situations

generally I don't use them as I protect my lenses with hoods
 
As I only use them for protection I have stuck a couple of Jessops ones on a couple of my lenses and I also have a Hoya one on another. Both fairly cheap.

That's exactly where I'm coming from short term..... I will spend good money on filters at some point how ever as I only got the camera a short time ago and I like my bits attached cheaper will have to do for the moment.


How do you find these filters ? Are the ok ?

* No UV/'protective' filter can improve image quality on a dSLR.
* All UV/'protective' filters will cause some degradation in image quality.
* The seriousness of this degradation tends to decrease as filter cost increases.
* Good filters will cause degradation that is not noticeable under most conditions.
* All filters, even the best, will cause noticeable degradation in some conditions.
 
I use the HOYA Pro1 protectors which are the best quality for doing exactly that protecting the lens! I don't see any benefit to paying the extra for UV as that is already part of the lens coating on my "L" Lenses.

Arrived :D

Got a couple of test photos off today so will have a proper look later. Re service.... I cant grumble.... Simon was helpfull on the phone and when he relised he had sent me the wrong lens flower dropped me a email first thing saying he will send a SAE and the right bit.... all that with out prompting....

8 out of 10 cos I cant give 9 and never give 10.....
