UV or not UV - that is the question

UV or not UV – that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous images,
Or to take arms against a sea of filters
And, by opposing, end them. To die, to use
No more –.......oh sod this, basically do I use a UV lens filter or not?

I have been told that using a UV filter can do more harm to my lenses than by not using one.

Apologies to any of you shakespeare fans out there.

ive got hoya pro UV's on the 70-200's mainly as theyre subjected to harsher conditions more often. the 120-300 i cant afford a filter for lol. the 50mm ive only just got and wasnt really planning to get one for it.

on the 70-200's i dont notice any image degredation with the UV's.

I've got Pro UVs on the 24-70 and the 70-200 and can see no degradation in IQ either. The glass on both lenses is flawless as a result hence I reckon they're well worth it.

Where is that popcorn........ Personal choice, me, I like having a UV on there- I know I can't wreck the end of my very expensive lens.

Protect your glass with a UV, what price a new lens?
Jim

I have read a number of different blogs (none of which I have to hand) that say the reason for camera shops telling you that a UV filter should be brought to protect the front element is that they make a higher mark up on filters, then lenses...all sales at the end of the day.

I have had my 10-20 for nearly two years now, and it has taken a lot of abuse, an so far, this has been without a UV filter and the front element hasn't taken any damage...

Except water, when it was left in a water proof compartment, that flooded.:bonk:

said before "dont need a UV for digital sensors"
but ...front of my Sigma 17 is exposed so use a "Protector" Marumi DHG

Hoya HD also found not to degrade image at all

Q.E.D.

Yea sorry, I only use mine for protection, not for "blocking" UV rays etc.

Some lenses require a filter on the end to complete the weather sealing.

There is no right answer. There are times where it would clearly be preferable to have one on (a sandstorm may be one such time) and times when it would be better not too (shooting into strong light), but if you do decide to use one make sure it is of good quality.

I don't use them and reason it's just another layer for the light to pass through. I am very careful and feel a lens hood is more than enough protection.

There are also those that leave the plastic on led displays. Now they are ravin' :D
