Vertical Digital Pattern at the left side- What is it?

Can someone help me please. I have forgotten how to upload on this site to show you the image in question.

Would it be my Canon 5D or the 85mm 1.8 lens that could cause a digital pattern down the left hand side of each shot? It may have been doing it for a while, but having a white background wasn't so noticeable. I took the image in the studio of a family sitting on the floor and this 'pattern' is right down the ladies arm, hand and leg. I need to know what caused it to stop it happening again.

Any ideas? I have trawled this site and Googled and nothing has come up.

Thanks - Gillian

No idea about the problem, but if you resize the image to 800pixels on the longest side and upload it to the gallery here (on the top menu bar) you will be able to link to it in the thread so people can see what the problem is :)

I will have another go at uploading it. Thanks Susie

I have pasted this link from my Gallery page. I hope someone can throw some light onto its cause.

Here is a 100% crop of the problem - Please help! Thanks

No I don't think it does. This photoshoot was 22 families. They each had a separate CF card. I will go and check some of the other families off other cards. Thanks

Just that one image?

No, not just the one. There are several photographs in that family group. I have just checked the close up portraits of the individuals are fine, it seems to be when I step back several paces to capture the larger compositions is where it appears.

That's an odd one. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the anti aliasing filter on the camera. It's odd because it appears to be a vertical line down one side and it has a definate pattern. But then it's not happening on every shot.......

Have you shot any since with a different lens? I'd be surprised if it's a lens issue since it occurs in a straight line but it would be worth eliminating.

Have you tried contacting Canon and emailing them an image?

are the faulty ones all at the same aperture?
or all wide?
or all stopped down?

Duff sensor or filter I'm afraid - take it in for a service/repair - is it still under warranty?
Take the images and both cards with you spo the techs can see what the problem is - much easier than trying to explain it...

Hello Gillian,

It may be that Arkady is correct that its a Duff sensor or filter.........

- but the 5D has been known to be very sensitive to electrical interference.

- for example with a colleague of mine, we found that his Quantum Battery pack which is used to power his flashgun worked fine for his 20D caused banding on his photos when used on his 5D - he had to remove the battery pack from the bottom of the camera and carry it on his belt.

You mentioned that the problem may have occurred as you stepped back to take the larger group shots - would you then have been standing nearer, to a studio light or some other piece of equipment which may be generating the interference?

Might be worth an experiment to rule out this possibility?

regards

Roy

They were various apertures from 5.6 - 8

Aha! I think I may be getting close to solving the problem with your probing and this is what I think.

After my last photo shoot I had to send my 85mm 1.8 lens to Fixation as the autofocus wouldn't work. So for the last couple of families and as I did not know if it was the 5D causing the lens not to work, I swapped cameras and set up my 20D with the 85mm and then realised it was the lens and swapped it for the 50mm 1.4. I was trying to work out the Maths in my head that going from a FF to a Crop sensor camera that the 50mm would not be too far from the 85mm.

However, for the very last family, I swapped the camera back to the 5D and put on the 50mm 1.4, and after going through some 800 images of the day and finding the exact time of the swap around, I have found that every image taken with both the 20D/50mm and 5D/50mm are perfect. Phew!!! Fixation have sent me a estimate report with includes replacing the focussing unit and PCB unit.

So I think I will wait for the repair to be carried out by Fixation and then do some serious testing.

I was getting a bit concerned because my new studio lighting set-up is the Lencarta system which I am more than happy with. However, someone apart from Roy above mentioned interference from radio transmitters and the Lencarta has a mains powered one - Phew! again.

Thank you all for your detailed responses which helped me a lot.

Regards Gillian

I thought this link might be useful to someone on Talk Photography. If you scroll down, it does mention banding problems and that some lenses make the 5D worse. Strangely enough, my 85mm 1.8 is listed and a possible part replacement to rectify it. I think I will stick to plan A and await the repair job and go from there.
