viewfinder: FX lens on an DX body

I have a d90 with a 24-70 f2.8 lens. Over the past few weeks i've noticed that i'm chopping off the top of heads etc. The other night when i set up the hilite i made a point of leaving a decent space around portrait shots, but once uploaded its clear that the top of heads are missing.

i always thought viewfinders normally show LESS than the actual image ? does an FX lens on a DX body cause this problem?

Maybe your viewfinder is mis-aligned?

I thought the same at one point but it is the easiest thing to check. Just take a shot so that you get the top of a door exactly on the edge of the lens and see what you get......

just tried it with the telly , as its not far off a perfect fit. it is pretty much bang on, even liveview. oh well, my concious effort to frame better wasn't that conscious after all!

Yup which means the pentaprism that sends the light to the viewfinder is out of alignment.

Sorry, but if what i frame through the viewfinder is pretty much exactly the same as the recorded image, then i still have problem?

The D90's viewfinder has 96% coverage, which suggests to me that if you frame a door frame tightly, you should have a little extra room around it in the actual exposure . It certainly shouldn't be cutting of parts of the image though :shrug:.
