Thinking of moving away from Sky broadband to 10 mb Virgin broadband, seems a better tv package deal than what I have with Sky at the moment, missus wants more channels without paying through the nose.

Anyone in the Edinburgh area on Virgin's 10 mb tell me how they rate in broadband speeds?

If I choose a 10 mb speed using their fibre optics how close to the 10 mb will I get?
I have 20mb broadband ADSL (which I know is slower than cable) from Sky but only ever get around 13 mb

At one point I was getting over the 20mb speed, but recently is slowed down a bit.

Also the bill has been steadilly increasing. I started on £20 a month, Im now paying almost £40 and havent changed any services. Ive rang them numerous times and they have discounted a little, but then add a quid here and a quid there to get it back up again.

They know I dont have a BT line, so Im stuck without spending a fortune.

The last time I studied a comparison between Virgin TV and Sky, I found the packages we wanted worked out cheaper with Sky. By a pound!

Check carefully before jumping.

I'm not located near you, however, Virgin's cable/fibre speeds are pretty accurate, as they don't have the "distance from the exchange" problems that plague ADSL.

I get 9.8Mbps from my "10Mbps" connection.

If you're looking at a Virgin cable service, you have no concerns about the broadband speed. It's not an 'up to' service like you get with adsl. It's fibre optic and therefore it 'just is'. So a 10mb connection will get you about 9.8 Mb the remainder of the bandwidth is for upload, so my 9.9 + .45 = 10.35. It doesn't go lower at prime time it's just solid.

In 8 years we've had to reboot the 'modem' about 6 times due to loss of service.

As for the TV packages, they're cheap as long as you don't want Sky channels. However they do come into their own with HD and the plus service.

Both the video on demand and the plus service are technically better than Sky, but Sky have more HD channels. Between Video on Demand and recorded content we very rarely watch any live TV in our house. We watch what we want, when we want.

Phil has summed it up perfectly why I have Virgin and not Sky

Best place to go for anything to do with VM is Cable Forum. Nice bunch of very knowegable chaps, and some insiders too

The Mrs and I have Virginmedia 10 Mb Broadband and V+ HD TV XL package plus mobile internet.
We pay £44 a month for the services and extremely happy.
Using speedtest our download speed tops out at around 9.7/9.8 Mb.
It will dip slightly during peak times but not enough to notice a major difference.

I pay £40 for the XL package, which is 50Mb, uncapped and currently without traffic shaping.

So does my father in Law. I told them this and they said it was impossible and wouldnt lower my price anymore or upgrade any services.

Ive looked in to switching to sky, but with the cost of having a BT line put in and then getting the equivelent package we have now worked out a lot more money.

Im on virgin, have been forevor. 10 meg is good mate, usually get around 9-10. Im on 20 meg now and get 18-19 ish.

i love my virgin, have only ever had one problem with them, and then they rectified it and gave me 2 months free! I have all TV, Internet, Phone and a Mobile deal, get a nice discount too :)

I normally call up every so often and try my luck, generally get something out of them :)

Thanks everyone who replied, looks like virgin is the better bet for broadband, will need to suss out the telly part now. Thanks again

TV XL is considered to be the best value package.
