Never tried this before but quite fancy having a bash.

Correct me if I'm wrong,

Is it,

Cable modem plugged into server 'in NIC' and then router plugged into server 'out NIC' with the server being used as a router?
 
What are you actually trying to do with your VPN?
 
Access the server from any PC with internet connection.
 
What router are you using?

Some routers have VPN options built in(draytek are a good example)

If you have cable modem > router > server and then set up VPN software on your server you should be able to set up connections that way.

What do you want to be able to access the server for?

If you want to share music over the web then there is software like vibe streamer which is an amazing bit of software and its free :D

Thats not neccesarily VPN. In fact if you really mean from any Pc then it is not VPN.

Virtual Private Networks are way of setting up a secure link between a remote PC and your server. Think of it as a virtual leased line.

Are you actually wanting to set up a server in a DMZ so that people can access particular services on that server?

Tell us what you want to do in more detail.
 
I want to be able to access (load/download) files on a server in my home from anywhere. I still want my simple home network to work.
 
Router is a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54

I really need to see the files etc as many will be pics and I have no way of remembering all the file numbers.
 
Just checked and it seems that your router can have the DD-WRT firmware installed. the firmware will allow u to create a vpn on the router :D

They have a really good community over there who will be able to help you with the finer details of setting up the bpn on the router.
 
Hmmm, just had a quick look, this is all starting to get a bit confusing for my small brain! :D
