I'm trying to decide on an upgrade for the Canon 18-55 IS kit lens with my 550D. I've found it to be a very good lens but I want to upgrade it to something that I can use in low light without flash and without having to push the ISO. The choices are:

Canon 17-55mm f2.8. By all regards this seems to be the lens of choice but it is rather expensive and it's a bit naughty of canon not to include a lens hood at least.

Sigma 17-50 f2.8. This seems to be a new model and there aren't many people posting about it yet. It includes a hood, case and a 3 year UK warranty. It is also just over 2/3 the price of the Canon.

I don't have much experience of Sigma lenses and my head says this is the best deal. But my heart says save up for the Canon.... I prefer to buy new so with this in mind which one should I go for?

Cheers

I had the 17-55/2.8 IS and it is a stonking lens. It gave brilliant sharpness and colours, and was my absolute favourite lens. I would definately save up and get that over the Sigma, but then I do not buy 3rd party lens. Why not get a second hand one from here? Or, PM Kerso and ask him for a price, that will definately be better than what you can get over the counter or online.

tamron 17-50 2.8 is a great lens, I can't see any reason for upgrading to the nikon 17-55 2.8 from it, and it earns me a living...

Another vote for the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Much cheaper than the Canon and I can't say I've ever really missed the IS going from the kit lens.

I use the Tamron on my 550D, totally impressed by the results, its excellent for the price.

i love the tamron 17-50 too though i use the nikon version. If speed is your issue, how about going even faster - like a sigma 30mm f/1.4 prime or a nifty fifty?

Thanks for your replies. I hadn't considered the Tamron lens but it looks quite interesting and the price is attractive too considering it has a 5 year guarrantee and the lens hood.

In real life situations how fast is the AF on this lens (the VC version?) ?

I'll take a look at the two primes mentioned too - they look quite interesting.

i had the vc version and returned it, have a poke about but it does not get great reviews
i now have the non vc
