Walkabout Lens

I would go for a used 24-105 F4 L. It's tack sharp and covers a good focul length, even on a crop.

For a cropper I would suggest the 17-55/2.8 IS. It is great in low light as it has a constant f2.8 and really sharp. I also think that the wide end is really usuable and 17mm will get you many nice shots. I wouldn't have anything else as a walkabout for a crop sensor.

I absolutely loved mine and if it worked on a full frame, it would still be here. There are some reviews that say about it getting dusty and that the build quality isn't as good as the L lens, but having had one for about a year, I would disagree with the issues.

I would look at the 15-85 for a decent walkabout...

Better range, excellent IQ and it will easily fit in your budget....

Unless you need 2.8 of course.....

Having had the same want myself, i tried the 15-85 lens but although thought it was a great lens it did not compare with the 24-105 F4 i had in the end.

The 24-105 (cracking lens) is virtually glued to my 5D, but I don't use it on the 7D/walkabout as not really wide enough on a crop - in my view!

As per Martins suggestion, I use the 7D/15-85 - and very happy with the combination!

I would agree 100% with that.
