Walkabout Nikon Lens

My mum has just dropped her Nikon 18-135 on the floor, and whilst it still works ok, the focus ring is sticking and it rattles when its shaken

I'd like to buy her a replacement for xmas, something with a bit more reach, but still the same at the wide end. VR or equivalent would be nice.

I have no knowledge of this area of the market, so was hoping for a few suggestions please. Budget up to £400, would consider 2nd hand if necessary
