Didn't realise he had such a large family....
Your email address is more or less public anyway. I’m not sure just how many email addresses I have .. (thinks), 5 gmail, a dot Mac , an outlook.com, a live.co.u. There may be others ... Oh, there are .
All gmails can be written as google mail for historic reasons and you can put as many dots as you like in your part of the email address. My dot Mac can also be written dot me, dot iCloud and I have several “aliases” from when you could do it with dot Mac.
Additionally you can add what you like with a plus sign (I think not always handled correctly but Gmail accepts it: https://support.cloudhq.net/how-to-setup-gmail-aliases/ ).
So without going on and on, you can give a variety of email addresses to traders and filter them in your email client which will also identify who they’ve passed your details to.
Next time ask the shop assistant if the practice of asking for the email address is GDPR compliant? That will likely confuse him/her.
On a related note ~ when talking to companies on the phone (e.g. phone orders) and they ask for phone number or email address I always ask why/what for and some will say "in case we need to contact you about this matter......." All very well but in all such circumstances explicitly tell them that I am only giving my permission to use the phone number/email for communication in regard to this matter AND not for any other purpose. To date I have never knowingly had that permission abused!
PS AFAIK when doing an online order where phone & email address are asked for/needed the company are obliged to include at the end of the order process apart from the 'tick' agreeing to the terms & conditions of supply, another 'tick' box to opt in to marketing communications i.e. the giving of the contact details for order processing reasons is not a hidden default method of garnering info for marketing.
I’m sure you will know this but the NSA has all your details anyway:Exactly..re GDPR. An EU initiative as you'll know. The customer has to give permission to have marketing material sent to them or the company contravenes that law.
Yes, agree...lol. The poor shop assistant or the equivalent online and I have no idea what they are called..An agent. ? customer care personnel/operative ? whoever, he/she won't have a clue. If they're of a certain age they may think it's a reference to the East German state, as was...
I always remember to tell the person taking my call at insurance renewal that I don't want, firstly..auto-renewal and secondly, marketing material and not to share my details with companies whose products they think I might be interested in..like what ?. As with yourself,I haven't had any issues. So, it woks, seemingly.
Yesterday,I reported to the city council a large spillage of litter that had fallen from a truck onto a roundabout .It included a couple of approx 3' X 3' boards. A hazard. It hadn't been there when I drove past that roundabout on the way to a shop. The young man at the other end asked me to desribe what was there. I told him that as I was driving around the roundabout with cars ahead and behind me I didn't have time to take more than a glance. If there's one item on a road that could cause a problem then most times I'll stop and remove it but not on this occasion. Too much and too much traffic. I didn't want an epitaph.. "He died (was killed) doing what he loves..keeping the place tidy...lol. I do litter-picking. So, "It's on the roundabout is it ?. "Yes" I said..then thinking he's got the wrong end of the stick here..I explained that it was not ON the roundabout..ie the grassed area but on the roadway. "Ok" got it", he said.Lol. Give me patience He then asked for my name, postcode and then what house number, home telephone number-mobile number and Email address. I felt like asking him if the council wanted to know what I'd had for breakfast. lol,.I told him that all I wanted to do was to report a road hazard. Did I want a reference number. No.. I'll leave it with you,I won't be calling back to see if it's been actioned.I was tempted to tell him that it could have been cleared up in the time he'd taken asking all these question. They have employees out on the roads who they can direct to situations like this. If he'd had my Email I expect I'd have got a "How did we do today ?" request . Everyone wants to know a caller's details when most times it isn't necessary and I wonder where all this informatiuon is going beyond these people. It shouldn't be going anywhere but I do wonder if it's sold unless someone can tell me it isn't.
Let me clarify that for you.
I did not mean at the same time as hanging his hand out of the window, of course you should always have at least one hand on the steering wheel.
It is illegal to hold a mobile phone etc. whilst driving. but it is NOT illegal to drive with only one hand on the steering wheel,
it may not be safe and as far as I can see that is all your link says, nothing about it being illegal perhaps you could find a link that says it is, because I can't
Oh yes, I realised that!
If an amputee can drive with one arm/hand, how can it be illegal for a non amputee to drive with only 1 hand on the wheel?Ingrid..I've posted two links and I'm not sure which one you are referring to. One is concerning research results from Esure insurance company which ,as you say..states that it's unsafe but it says nothing about it contravening any Road Traffic Law. The other link I introduced in reply to sphexx in post #9300 which lists actions which could fall foul of the 'not in proper control' law.
Not Being in Proper Control of a Motor Vehicle | Gray and Co Solicitors
www.grayandcosolicitors.co.uk
Whilst that particular action of the driver is not specifically mentioned in the examples given in which an offence would be committed it also states that the offence of 'Not being in proper control'..is not defined in law. However, this statement was preceded by...'There will be many other instances which could amount to 'not being in proper control' and I would think that driving in the manner of the example I cited would attract the attention of police and may well result in a fixed penalty notice (ticket) being issued, assuming there is a FPN covering this otherwise a driver would be reported for summons which the police officer wouldn't do if he/she didn't think the driver had committed an offence.
I'm sure sphexx won't mind me citing his response to me telling him this.

It wasn't hot today,Richard..It's just a stupid way to drive..illegal too. Not having proper control over the vehicle. No doubt he'd say he had. I looked to see if he was dropping a cigarette end but he wasn't. £100 fine plus three penalty points. https://www.grayandcosolicitors.co.uk/not-proper-control-motor-vehicle/
You clearly think otherwise by writing the word 'not' [illegal] in bold font. It is, in my opinion and that of sphexx, misplaced confidence. Infact, I'll make an inquiry of a friend we have who is a retired Traffic officer and see what he would have done and maybe we'll get a definitive answer.

Yes, of course but I was more focusing on the likes of uk retail outlets whose aim is selling more of their merchandise to me.. . I haven't given the Council our ex-directory phone number nor my wife's mobile. cant recall if they have our dob but as you point out there are ways officialdom can easily gain any information they want. This Data Protection Act and now the GDPR has caused some problems and even hampered police (here and abroad) in their inquiries.
On GDPR & WAM a few days ago. I took my dog to see a different vet (partly more convenient partly mine had been a bit awkward at the start of COVID).
a few days later I got an anonymous email from my vet saying they had a request for her details from the other vet vet and due to GDPR I had to give them permission. Aside from the possibility that a dog is not a person under GDPR, I pointed out that their terms and conditions on their web site stated (I won’t bore you with the details) that all her records were their property and that I could request to see them by appointment and that a charge would (or could?) be made! Got a grovelling reply back from the boss -- well, not actually grovelling, he’s a Scot (as they all are at the surgery) and they don’t do grovel , blamed his staff and his professional association for standard terms & conditions .
If an amputee can drive with one arm/hand, how can it be illegal for a non amputee to drive with only 1 hand on the wheel?
I do think though that a driving instructor should be setting a better example.
I think the problem is that as usual everyone is right (except outside TP, where everyone is wrong ). Many/most things that people do for which they can be prosecuted aren’t so specifically defined — I’m fairly sure there’s no law that says driving with your arm out of the window is illegal (eg hand signals ). Mostly, like John’s example would be ”driving without due care ... “. I think driving round a bend one handed might fall into that if it was documented. Your example of the one-armed man — probably has his car adapted to help him.If an amputee can drive with one arm/hand, how can it be illegal for a non amputee to drive with only 1 hand on the wheel?
I do think though that a driving instructor should be setting a better example.
As far as I know, Bob, amputees have specially-designed steering wheels
But that wouldn’t explain his driving with his arm as described (unless a joke plastic one — though I think that could be an offence too ).Indeed. I drive using hand controls so only have one hand on the wheel (unless using cruise control) but I have one of THESE attached to the steering wheel. Could it have been possible that the car you saw had something similar? When I changed to hand controls, I had to have familiarisation lessons with BSM who have specialist vehicles/instructors.

I'm not going to argue any further, it's pointless with some people.
I'll just leave this link, which was 2 years ago so may have changed
The surprising thing you can get away with doing in your driving test
We did a mock driving test to trial the new changes and found out something rather surprisingwww.kentlive.news
Don't drag me into this I know better than to argue with a womanCobra and I disagreed about keeping snakes in semi-detached suburbia.
I'm with you there, disgraceful, you must in a detached house If you want to keep a Burmese python or a palace for a Python regius .Don't drag me into this I know better than to argue with a woman
I sold my Burmese ( or Indian as they were known back then) pythons to a breeder once they hit 16 feetI'm with you there, disgraceful, you must in a detached house If you want to keep a Burmese python or a palace for a Python regius .
Ah, I see its called a Ball Python now, I think I used to know it as Royal Python, hence "Palace", I suppose it needs a Ballroom now .I sold my Burmese ( or Indian as they were known back then) pythons to a breeder once they hit 16 feet
One grabbed me once, on the arm, and I got friction burns from it constricting.
Powerful creatures!
The ball Pythons ( regius) went about the same time.
All that's left is my son's red tailed Boa, that he decided, when he moved out, his "place" was too small for the Viv
That's the name they were given years ago, due to their habit of curling up into a ball when handled.Ah, I see its called a Ball Python now
Ah, Palmer’s on Parkway, Camden Town, I don’t think I ever bought anything there but used to wander round it on my way to London Zoo from the tube station . They claimed to be able to get anything. Seem to remember them being prosecuted in more recent years. All this talk about Pythons & Boas takes me back >50 odd years ago and to the Boys & Girls Exhibition at Olympia. One year there was a reptile exhibitor and my first opportunity to handle them......a wonderful experience.
Though I wanted a Boa my mum would have freaked out.........so had common Vivaparous Lizards for a few years. For my exotica reptile fix, I was fortunate enough that my A Level biology tutor was a licensed keeper..... Iguana, Alligator were the ones he was permitted to keep at school. Though the most amazing creature was the one he brought on only a few times, his Golden Eagle.
PS I bought my lizards from Palmers Pet Shop in London.......that was an amazing place and as I recall world famously.

Possibly when you wrote No it's not (regarding me saying it was an offence) in bold letters which is ,in effect, the written form of shouting at someone
No it's not unless you are using the other hand to hold food, drink, mobile phone etc.
Your link clearly doesn't say it either, how else would we change gear etc ?
Jeez, reading the posts between you two its like something off the Monty Python ‘argument’ sketch.Having finally had a bit of time to waste, can I just say that as you can see from the above
I didn't actually write that in bold, you chose to change that when you quoted me in post
9310 when you actually were the first to type in bold
My first use of bold was was in reply in post 9318, a single word to emphasis it not to shout

in fact you are both bickering so much I think you may be marriage material.
Oops......Really, so you don't feel I have the right to defend myself against someone editing my post and misquoting me then making false accusations ?
As for the original topic, that's past history for me, nothing more to say

[Before we start another one . my emphasis, strikethrough & insertion of “my”, above]This quote..Re your reply to Graham above #9347.. Yes, absolutely, you're right to draw my attention tomemy having put your comment in bold when you didn't do it originally. I can see that now. I can only think I must have returned to this forgetting I'd done it. Please accept my apologies.

I wouldn’t ordinarily remark on this but you have repeatedly mistreated the poor gerund in this ’conversation’ with @Gremlin and it grates with me each time I read it
I daresay everyone gets some confusion at some point about motoring offences. Yesterday, on our local Facebook group, a woman posted that she had been sent a fine/ penalty for her vehicle being in a yellow hatched box and wanted to know why as she hadn't stopped. She had provided the photo of the offence and people were offering advice or opinions as to whether she should appeal against it as she had done nothing wrong or, pay up as she had committed an offence. One man got quite irate at the people quoting or referencing the highway code, which proved she had indeed committed the offence.Yes, yes..quite right.. I wish I'd never added.."it's an offence, too"..Lesson learnt here..less said, the better. Pass me the tablets......or should that be least said ?...Lol.

But did the bus move before she got there and could continue along her way?which proved she had indeed committed the offence.
If the bus moved before she got there, it would have to be moving backwards. The rules say you can't enter the box unless the other side is clear, which would be enough room for her vehicle and clear the box. Even the space behind the vehicle next to the bus isn't big enough for her vehicle, she should have waited until there is room, then proceed into and out of the box.But did the bus move before she got there and could continue along her way?
There should be a follow up image of her stopped in the box behind the traffic
But are they 100% sure that the bus was stopped?
As above 2 images required to prove she broke the law
Fair point well presentedbut there is a car to the right of the bus and the white car is in the middle so they could still be moving and looking to move behind said car.
And as you know brake lights doesn't mean that the vehicle has stopped. It does look like the brake lights are on
