I use my D3300 and the 18-55mm kit lens for video. It is OK for video at the wider angle, but can struggle focusing at the zoom end. I also struggle a little with focus when the 35mm lens is fitted. I now use manual focus when using the D3300 for video.

I too want to concentrate more on video. I have been reading up on the Panasonic TZ100. But seeing it is about £500 or so, I am reading the reviews closely.

Hi John,
I'm considering the FZ1000 RX10ii TZ100,whats the difference between these and say a dedicated video cam?

e.g. this
Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK 4K Ultra HD Camcorder

Ho Chris
I have two Camcorders one is a MiniDv tape while the other is a Standard Definition Camcorder. The IQ of my Camcorders is not as good as my Nikon D3300 and for still images both are a waste of time. I am sure the latest Camcorders are probably better, and some do take good still images.

The design of the traditional camcorder can be very clumsy and bulky. Most camcorders seem to have smaller sensors also. If I could find a good camcorder with good IQ for both stills and video, in a neat little package, I would probably take a good look at it.

I am not to well up on the info, of the cameras you mentioned. Only reviews what I have read on the TZ100.

Sorry Chris, I wish I could be more helpful.

Just looking at some of the reviews of purchasers, and some say " it is as good as their Nikon DSLR for still images". While others say "Stunning picture quality", " Amazing camera, fantastic quality picture and zoom. Would recommend to any aspiring videographer".

So it seems some people do like it. It is a nice looking camera, might be worth having a look on youtube. See if anyone has uploaded any video clips, using the camera.

Do you need 4k, do you need shallow dof, do you need big sensor performance, do you need fast af, do you want a huge amount of zoom? Stabilisation?

Budget?

Sooooo much to think about isnt there.

I def want 4K,stabalization yes. bigger zoom be useful but could live with 200mm equiv, decent af yes I like.

I have toyed with the idea of getting another camcorder, it is just the size and shape that puts me off. I find a Camcorder too cumbersome to carry about. If I spotted one that was not too big and had good IQ for both stills and video. I may be tempted to get one that I would use in the park etc, with the family. Provided it was affordable.

Hi Chris ( @SsSsSsSsSnake ) I wonder if the Panasonic FZ1000 will be any better, or even as good as the D3400 for both stills and video? The sensor on the Panasonic is a lot smaller than the D3400. I do not think I would swap my D3300 for the Panasonic. I also find bridge cameras too bulky and cumbersome.

Hey Chris ( @SsSsSsSsSnake ) I wonder if the Panasonic TZ100 is worth looking at? It has the same size sensor but better zoom over the FZ1000. I know the FZ1000 does 4K, but is 4K much good on a smaller sized sensor?

It does get very good reviews john, though i agree the sensor in the 3.... series is exceptionally good but the panny would be convienient and the 4k sounds good

Yes I would want 4k and u are probably correct 4k would be better with better optics but I feel it would be good enough for my modest requirements lol

But surely your Nikon D3400 would be just fine, for your modest requirements. ;)

PS

Just an excuse to get another toy. :D

How come something like this is to cumbersome to carry about? compare it with my nikon D800 and 24-70mm lens. i think you are misleading the OP

Still taken with camcorder above

video from same camcorder (handheld)

I said I find it too cumbersome, it is obviously NOT too cumbersome for you. I did NOT say it was too Cumbersome for Chris ( @SsSsSsSsSnake ) . So you think I am misleading the OP? I was simply trying to help him with my own thoughts and ideas.

Anyway I have now got a few jobs to do around the house, I think I will spend my time doing something more productive. ;)

PS

@SsSsSsSsSnake , Chris I was obviously misleading you, I do apologise. I hope you do find a suitable Camera/ Camcorder that you enjoy using.

I can get that camcorder in my trouser pocket and often did have to in Egypt to stop it getting snatched. So I don't think it is too cumbersome for anyone.
If doing video work the hardest thing to overcome is wind noise across the microphone. i wanted something smal but good with a decent wind muffler. So i got a sennheiser MK400 mike with a gutmann deadcat which has about the longest hairs on it I could find. Then next problem was the hairs going across the lens so found these to raise it up

Bazza,im confused about what does the pan camcorder have as a sensor in comparison to say the FZ1000,im a complete noob on camcorders, do they work differently to the cameras video

Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK 4K Ultra HD Camcorder,
PANASONIC HC-VX870EB-K 4k Ultra HD Camcorder - Black
whats the main difference please

Camcorders have small sensors, you should know how that effects image quality, iso, dof etc. I wouldn't go for anything with less than an apsc sensor or id just use my s7.

A common mistake trying to do a comparison between a camcorder and a camera, they are two completely different animals. Try shooting 50 still frames a second with a camera for example, my panasonic HC-X900M can do that. it also has a built in 32gb memory and takes SD cards so you can record to both or stills on one and video on other. Also with a camcorder you are not limit to recording time as you are with a camera
Try zooming with that FZ1000 and then with mine

example, watch whole video

I have yet to see any camera zoom as much and as close at video end all by itself.

Now I do have both DSLR and camcorder both have there place, for example using a camcorder in a church service makes no noise, a camera shutter click can be annoying.

One thing often forgotten is sound reproduction, just as important as video quality

How often have you looked a a photo and wondered what was out of shot on the sides?

for specialist photos a camera wins hands down a camcorder can't compete, say for portraits etc

you may ask how good are they indoors?

Hand held on ship railing indoors

yes I did have a chance to talk to her;) wish i had a tripod with me

I tried doing video with my Nikon D800 and the auto focus made loud clicks and it is recommended doing everything on a manual setting

Another of my camcorder zoom examples as the ship was about to leave dock in Denmark, the wind noise ruined it
had no extrnl mike with deadcat

I don't know anything about the cameras you are considering so would not dare to comment on them. If I were you I would do a printout of the spec of each for a side by side comparison. Next go to a camera shop with an SD card and try out both stills and video from each camera onto that card Go home put them up on your computer screen and then decide.
£700/800 is a lot of money so no rush to get one straight away without being sure.

You could check them out on youtube as well
