I know that you cant transfer a warranty if you buy a camera second hand, so what is the best thing to do in terms of insurance etc?

When I asked about warranty on lenses with Canon I was told that as far as they were concerned if a lens failed within warranty it didn't matter if you had bought it secondhand or not.

I wasn't asking about cameras, so I don't know the answer on those, I bought an unused 40D secondhand and registered the warranty myself so I know that is covered anyway.

I'd have serious doubts that Canon's warranties are transferable to a second owner like that, no-one else's are....

Registering the lens or camera with them doesn't guarantee that they'll honour any warranty, nor is it a requirement in order to get warranty work carried out, what you need is a a dated receipt or other proof of purchase from an authorised Canon dealer.

I can only work on the reply that I got from Canon, and I have kept the email should I require it.

I imagine it is the same deal as philips with their products, they will only work from the date of manufacture for warranty rather than the date of purchase if you can't provide a date of purchase with a receipt.

I have a copy of the receipt for the camera by the way, I got the cash back with it, but the Canon email regarding the lens confirms that the receipt wasn't needed for the lens.

Perhaps it is worth contacting the camera manufacturer and asking them for their view on their warranty.
