I'm going to a big car show tomorrow and was hoping to get lots of photos but the weather forecast is lots of rain.
Is there a waterproof cover I can buy somewhere local today, such as at Wilkinsons?
Or some other method?
 
i keep a clear polythene bag and an elastic band to use as a makeshift rain cover after reading about it in a photography mag ages ago. i never had to use it though luckily.

depends on your budget..

tesco freezer bags and elastic bands - cheapest. not really reusable as tear easily on removable.

Optech rain covers - still fairly inexpensive. personally i found them really bad for fogging up, and they dont stay put on the lens too well.

StormJackets - more expensive (cheaper version are availble, some people have made their own from cut up waterproof trousers), pretty secure but open ended at the body end.

Think Tank Hydraphobia - Expensive but very thorough in the fitting and waterproofing department. I will be moving to these from StormJackets before the winter shooting season.
 
I use the Optech Rainsleeves, for around £5 for a pack of two I'm not complaining!

sacrifice a waterproof trousers seemed a bit overkill. I bought some camouflage water/shower proof fabric and begged my in-law to tailor one.

Neil could you please show a few more pics of this - if that is yours - probably not - just realise you cant take a picture like that for yourself

Only a cheap pair, not like an expensive gortex set lol

Yeah that's me curtosy of the OH, and that's a 1dmk3 and Sig 120-300 monopod mounted with a stormjacket pro (pro version has tripod access) in a large size if I remember rightly. If you need any more info just ask.
 
I would imagine the said tripod mount access can be a section of velcro tab or zipper leading to a 'hole' for pod's column? Can't imagine it would be more complicate than that?
 
Spoke to a pro sports photographer shooting BSB at Knockhill recently in horrible/wet conditions, he was using a 1D Mk3 & 300mm f/2.8 with a clear/crude plastic bag wrapped around body & lens, his words, "works a treat"!

Result.

The single layer nylon are cheap enough.

They helped my lens survive this years Knockhill BSB.

I think this design and photos there are good enough to make an 'in-law' version

Going to make a 1dmk3+400mmf2.8 version, I am so broke cant afford the ready-made copy. lol

100% home tailored made. :)
The camouflage layer is water/shower proof can apply water repellent if needed. inner layer is a breathable membrane. Lenses end and underside toward tripod/monopod column fastened by Velcro tab.
 
I source the camouflage fabric from eBay. Inner layer is more tricky, The breathable membrane is an inner layer to make film camera changing bag, which requires light safe but breathable.

Sorry that the for sale section is down, I have thought to list some for sale - I have got enough material to make 4 of this. My inlaw made this for me, good if she will find it useful by TPer. :)

If they've got optech rainsleeves then go for them. Pretty cheap and good. About £5 for 2 :)

Alternatively, some tesco freezer bags and elastic bands would work!
