how do you manualy set your white balance on ad300 with one of the exposure aids ??

Have you tried reading the manual? In the D700 manual (which is undoubtedly very similar to that of the D300) it takes you through taking a test shot and taking the white balance from that.

My Canon 5D is the same - select the menu option, take a test shot of something white or grey & set

i have used a Nikon d300.You have to go the white balance setting and press it until you see ' pre' which flashes.Then take a test shot of the expo disc and use it.
