have set up a simple HTML site for a friend.

i have been recommended both joomla and wordpress to help design the site but dont know which one to go for.
the basic site needs
news updates
sponsor section
Gallery
video
about himself
links
it needs to be easily managed and updated
I read something about word press you can update blogs from emails is this right?
before i go out and buy book to learn, which platform should i invest my time in learning to give him what he wants?
any comments or help gratefully received or if anyone fancies a project. cant offer payment but name on car is possible plus clothing and a picture.....
