The following post is going to request a budget photographer. Offers are welcome from anyone from a keen and experienced amateur through to seasoned professionals. What I don't want in this thread is the age old debate about "you get what you pay for". It's all been said before and a lot of it deleted by the mods so please lets not go over it again. Thanks.

Right, I have a very good friend of mine who is planning her wedding. She currently lives in Munich but is originally from Morecambe for her sins so she is coming back over to England to get married in Lancaster. The B&G are funding the wedding themselves and are on a tight budget so I have told her that I'd help with her search for a photographer to ensure she gets the best value for money.

Here are the basic details:

Date: 4pm on Friday 31st July 2009
Location: Ashton Memorial, Lancaster
Wedding Type: Small intimate affair with just close family and friends

Here's a quote from the bride when she e-mailed me about her budget and other requirements.

"Back on the wedding photography I can answer you about budget... cheaper the better! We're paying for all the wedding ourselves, and with only one wage coming in, anywhere we can save money is a bonus. But don't get me wrong we want everything to be nice and as we want it. The plan is to have the ceremony followed by some champagne at Ashton Memorial - so hopefully on a nice day there will be a few nice photo's up there. Then we're looking at having a relaxed reception, possibly a barbeque at a restaurant. So perhaps some natural shots at that would be good. I guess at the end of it, it would be nice to have a couple of photo's to frame and an album to keep for ever. Other than that - is there anything I need to think about?"

Ideally I'd like to be able to find a photographer who has shot a wedding before and able to provide a portfolio of their work however experience in similar portrait work is also good. As a keen amateur photographer myself I am of the opinion that there are amateurs out there with the capability to produce very professional looking work but at a fraction of the price so all offers will be considered.

If you are interested in finding out further details then please send me a PM and we'll take it from there. If you've read this far but aren't interested then please hit the back button and move on.

Thank you,

-Rob-

Obvious question is why aren't you doing it?

I told her straight that I'm not prepared to do it because she is one of my best friends and I want to enjoy the wedding as a guest, not as a photographer.

I'm shooting my first 2 weddings in August and November so it's not that I'm against trying wedding photography, it's just that I don't want to mess up my first wedding if it's for someone I care about. Not that I want to mess up at all but I'm sure you see what I mean.

If I was doing weddings I'd offer. I'm just not set up for it at the moment sorry.
It's a fantastic venue, I've very fond memories of watching the sun set over Heysham power station from the Ashton Memorial, with a girl and a bottle of wine. :)

Sounds like a good oportunity for someone wanting to try it as their first. But although you've mentioned it is on a budget you haven't actually said how much they are prepared to pay for it.

I'm not knocking the idea - just wondering how cheap they are expecting this to be.

I've deliberately not put an actual budget figure in the request because I haven't had one from the bride. As you can see from the quote from the bride she says the cheaper the better. I'm going to see what offers come in over the weekend, speak to the bride again and she what she says. If the best offer I can pass on to her is way out of her budget then I may end up taking a camera along myself. I really hope it doesn't come to that though.

Fair enough. I can understand you not wanting to do it yourself. It's not a good position to be put in

Rob - Just PMed you.

What I would say is that if someone takes money for this wedding and screws it up it will be very expensive getting the B&G plus perhaps some other guests from Germany over for a reshoot. Either the tog will need to have good Professional Liability Cover or be prepared to take the risk.

That's the chance they are gambling on though in order to keep the costs down?

While it's true that you get what you pay for there is a risk involved in doing it this way and I don't think a reshoot would be on the cards?

Perhaps that needs to be communicated clearly to the happy couple. (Just a suggestion)

I also notice that the Bride wants an album done so please make sure you know what you are doing with that guys and gals. :)

Whilst I understand your point and your position, and also wish you good luck in finding a photographer to fit the bill (and I'm sure you will here - there are many good photographers here)- i don't think you can dictate the responses to the post  or dictate conditions on the reply.

Whilst people have the freedom of speech, they also have the right to remain silent should they not wish to contribute positively to the thread!

I would offer myself for the wedding but I'm not too sure on availability and if I'll be anywhere nearby...but I'll check it out on Monday :)

Why bother with this response?

I think you'll find my warning was a warning to those that would like to read a sensible post and a request to those that may want to spoil the post to kindly not do so. I can't dictate that they won't do it but luckily no one has yet.

Thanks for the offers that have been made so far. I am hopefully travelling to Munich in a couple of weeks when I will see the B&G and I'll discuss their wedding with them while I'm there. I'll try and get a decision from them then and make a firm booking with the photographer of their choice.

A friend of mine is semi-pro (as in he doesn't do it as his main job and doesn't charge a fortune) - he did my wedding, we liked it so much that he then did my sister's wedding, who liked it so much that the groom's brother booked him to do theirs.... so he's pretty good and very popular.

I'll PM his details over to you to speak to him.
