Not sure where this should have gone mods so sorry :S.

I need some help people, I have made myself a welding glass filter, read the turorials about setting white balance etc but Im still getting exactly the same colour cast on the image. Can anyone tell me how to set the WB on the Nikon D3000 so I can take a shot with the glass attached and have it come out normal colour?

Thanks in advance, Jim.

Have you tried auto WB? Also, WB is dead easy to alter in post, whether you shoot RAW or jpeg.

Iv changed the custom white balance to a shot with the green cast over it and even then the new shot comes out green. Not sure what Im doing wrong.

use a proper ND filter. welding glass is not designed for cameras.

wonder how many people that use welding glass don't use uv filters because they think it degrades the image

The only reason people use them is because they cost pennies, my glass was free and i used a filter ring i already had so cost me nothing. My glass is grade 11 so to get the same effect from a ND filter would i need to use an 11 stop?

Maybe those that use welding glass aren't looking for the technically perfect image? I know that when I use it I'm deliberately looking for the creative possibilities of the imperfections. Sharpness is over-rated.

are you able to set a custom white ballance the same on a nikon as canon, if so take a ling exposure with the welding glass on then set the WB from the image you just took... this works for me on canon with the pink cast from Cokin filters.

edit: if not it can be removed in LR fairly easially, otherwise its black and white time.

You may have to set it via another menu as we do with canons, first you say what image you want to use in the main menu, then on the back of the camera change the WB to custom, it could well be your not doing the last step, dont know if its the same with nikons

Tried all that dave and cant understand why its not working, guess Ill have to do it in lightroom and take a regular shot for reference. May just go and buy a ND10 or something

MMMM dunno then, are you sure your changing it to CWB you know where you change it to cloudy/shade/flash or whatever, as well as setting the image to be used

Ok so when I did mine yesterday, I pressed the wb button, then held it and waited for flashing PRE, then just took a shot with the welding glass on, all I get is 'unable to measure white blance, try again'. Now is this because the welding glass is on? or should I measure WB without the glass then attach it? I have no idea lol

Also in the video he says use the grey section of the card, for what reason would you use the white or the black?

The white balance adjustment required may be outside the limits of the onboard adjustment range. If it won't work, stick with adjusting in post.

Iam struggling to understand how I need to set my WB. I've set everything else up ok, and will be using a Canon 40d to take the photo. Hoping someone could assist me please :)

Should be the same as my 5D and old 300D.

Take a photo of your white balance target ( grey card, etc). Fill the frame with it, it doesn't have to be in focus. Make sure it's illuminated by the light source you want to balance against.

Go to the menus, select custom white balance. Pick the frame you've just shot. The camera then calibrates the white balance using that photo as its reference.

Then, on the dials, as you would when choosing Daylight, Tungsten, etc. choose the Custom setting. The review images of subsequent shots displayed on the back of the camera should look a lot better after that.

And shoot RAW so you can play with it more easily in PP :)

Thanks musicman, I still don't quite follow. Iam struggling with the first part of your explanation.

But yes I always shoot in RAW :)

I know this was along time back but my shade 11 comes out closer 16 stops. And the green cast is impossible to fix, I just went B&W on the few images I used it for.
