hi all - I'm sure this scenario has appeared many times, here's my version.

Went to look at picking up a FF today, went into the shop, went out to the car to think about parting with a few grand and left to go off and take pictures with my 600d :lol:

Problem is, I crave the truly clear high ISO speeds, being able to get the value for money from something like a 24-70 II and the obvious things like sharper images.

I've a Sigma 18-35 1.8, Sigma 10-20, Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 70-200 F4L and the kit lens.

I was looking at the 6D versus the 5DIII and the 6D being €2600 with the 24-105 versus the 5D being €3799 with 24-105 the dilemma of price difference is quite significant. Obviously I could sell my camera and the non FF lenses to contribute to the cost but my head is quite frustrated as every time I think about one versus the other, the AF points on the 5D rule my head.

All this said, for someone who is at present not making a single cent from taking pictures and doesn't really have major plans to in the near future (although doing bits and bobs along with my full time job does appeal a little), is a FF (particularly the 5D) just an unnecessary luxury for a hobby?!

Enthusiasts can afford to indulge their hobby. Splash out and enjoy it!
 
nothing wrong with buying the best cameras your money can buy... but on the flip side there is no reason why you cannot make money with your current crop body either so the decision lies in your hands! :D

I had the chance of getting a 5D2... and nearly took the guys hand off but then thought the only camera I really want to drop my 60D for is the 1DX and the 5D3 and the 5D2 felt like it would be a pointless thing to do.

But a 5D3 if you can afford it then no doubt its a far superior camera but then as I say... no reason why you cant use your 600 to make money
 
If you fancy something and you can afford to splash out why not.

However I am in much the same boat and I really do not feel the need to even use my 40D
these days, although in many respects it is better than my X20 which I use all the time.

In my time I have used every format up to 10x8 for both work and pleasure and I do not need that quality anymore.
Most shots are "Good enough" from most modern small sensors. I have not made a print much bigger than A3 in years. and likely never will again.

That said... It is nice to know that you can see the down on a peach, and many of us go through the phase of doing so. So if that is what floats your boat, or perhaps shooting flowers by moonlight, then go for it.

But don't fall into the mistake of thinking that the next one will be the last camera you will ever pine for.

It's Euros so the price is a bit dearer. That said, nothing stopping me going down the HDEW/Pixmania route either.

There's Canon Cashback on the 6D but not the 5D.

I suppose my question is, if it's a toss up between the two, is the autofocus on the 5D worth the extra wedge.

@ dalegt4 - I get you but my main thing at the moment is just enjoying getting out and shooting, making money is not my main motivator at moment although maybe in the future, having a studio is a nice dream.

Edit; Just spotted 5D on Pixmania for €3500!

Another vote for the 'if you can afford it, do it' camp.
 
The 5D3 is without a shadow of doubt the best camera I have ever owned. When I walked out of the shop with it I thought What the Hell have I done, I've just spent the thick end of 2500 quid on a body am I mad. A few months on and I know it was a bril
Isn't decision. You won't regret it if you can afford it.

Short of annoying the tax avoidance mob, why not take a look at hdew.

I got my 6D with 24-105 for £1600 although it seems the price has gone up a bit.

They are UK based and ship the goods to you from a warehouse in the UK. Whilst it will be a grey import, they do offer a 2 year warranty.

I too am in the if you can afford it and it something you really want camp.

Which would you prefer, spending the extra 1000 now, or spending years saying if only I bought so and so.
 
Same boat here. Best I could get was a 6D with 24-105 lens, yet no regrets. If could, I would have gotten 5D3, any particular reason? Pure class.
 
You're a long time dead :eek: If you can afford it go for it.
 
I have to say, having just upgraded to a FF from a 600D, I am very pleased. I loved my canon but just wanted "more", with noise being the main factor. It certainly makes a difference with a ff sensor.
 
If you're lucky enough to be able to buy one without going into debt just go for it as long as you're going to get plenty of use out of it

If you want it, and you can afford it without any stress, just buy it. People buy all sorts of things they may not really need, and there's nothing wrong with that.

It sounds as if you're not quite sure about this yet. That's fine too, the camera - or another one - will still be available when you decide, and it's not a big deal if you choose to stay with the 600D for now. It's an excellent camera.

I've put my 600D, Sigmas 18-35, 10-20 and kit lens online. If I get what I'm looking for price wise, I will be in a great position to add some of my own cash and buy the 5D. There's some good interest free offers available if I was after the camera today but I do prefer saving for things and not having to owe anyone. I'm sure I'd be happy with the 6D but I wonder would I always wonder what if...!

Buying options is a bit of a head wreck too, an actual shop, Pixmania, HDEW (that comes with a dilemma of its own) hard to know which one is the best all round. HDEW is a full €1,000 cheaper than a retail outlet in Dublin. But going into a shop with a problem is a nice option to have too.
 
Just personally, leaving aside the grey-import controversy, Pixmania is by far the worst company I've ever had to deal with. Items "in stock" when they aren't, un-trackable deliveries, naff-all customer support etc.
This was a few years back, but I'm never going back to them.
 
Pixmania only ever purchased once from them which was a Samsung bluray surround sound system and arrived great and cost was also not too bad.

In saying that I have seen horror stories about them
 
Picked up a 6D today with the 24-105 kit. :D

€2210 all in once I get the 190 Canon cash back! Haven't really had a chance to shoot with it yet but I'm happy :love:

:( I'm jealous!! I keep looking at these but my wallet is hurting from the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 vc I smuggled past the wife already this month.

I've had to sneak a few lenses into the bag too - you're not alone :)

Still haven't used it too much as I've been in work, the 24-105 is a nice lens I must say, I thought the F4 might not be great indoors but the ISO on quite brilliant and the night hand-held mode is seriously impressive. I took a picture of a bottle in a very dark bedroom last night and the image was totally usable and the writing on it was in focus etc, that really impressed me.
