What a difference a print makes...

I recently shot this image while I was at the seaside:

Now its not a bad image, I waited around for quite a while to get a shot with a bird in the right location. I uploaded it to the computer, edited it, fiddled a bit to get the effect I was looking for etc and that was about it. Happy enough with the photo but not over the moon.

...Then I was placing a test order with photobox so I sent a few images off to get printed 15"x10" @ 300ppi and oh what a difference a print makes - in its glossy sheen and rich colour this photo is a stunner - certainly one of my best and I would have overlooked it and moved on if I hadn't sent it off to be printed on a whim.

My monitors are calibrated and the colours are dead on the money. I'm happy with the setup and the colours and contrast of the printed photo are very very close to what I have displayed on the screen so its not something that photobox has done.

There is something about having it in print which just makes it a little bit magic!

I'm very happy at the moment - if your a photographer looking for some inspiration then perhaps you should send a few of your shots off to the printers - it did wonders for me

I really must do this! Having owned a dslr (well, onto my second now) and been giving this photography thing a go for over a year now, I can't quite believe I still haven't ever printed anything out.

Hopefully all this will change soon. I jut hope I'm as pleased as you obviously are.

Totally agree with you, I had a load of stuff printed the other week as I wanted to find a good printer. I had small shots done with photobox (who I just LOVE) and some large prints with foto.co.uk < am so impressed with all the prints I had done. You're right there is something really nice about having your photos in print.

Agree completely, it's one of the only negative sides to digital photography..for some reason people don't seem to print anymore. IMHO you only really know if you've taken a decent shot when you've seen it in print, I get most of mine printed at 18x12 inch, what's the point in having a 10mp+ DSLR if you only ever look at the shots at 72dpi on a PC screen
