A few months back I was waiting for the speedboats to go through the Solent and saw this chap with a big white lens. Not being a Canon user I would be interested to know what it is.
I'd agree with the 500 or 600 guess, the massive white bucket on the end is just the hood and isn't shown in the photos on the link, making it look like a bigger lens than it is. As for which it is, no clue, they look so similar.
It's definitely a 500 or 600mm f/4 L, but they're very difficult to tell apart at ths range. I think it's ptobably a 600. If you have a larger image, it will be possible to determine because the position of the red ring is a give-away. Unfortunately I can't quite see it cleary enough in this picture.
I put my 50p on a 500mm f4. The 600mm f4 has a much thicker rubber ring (camera end). 400mm only have two rings unless its a f2.8 but they are quite short. Defiantly not the 800mm f5.6 as there a totally different monster.
I'm gonna pitch in and say 500 as well. the red "L" band is much closer to the focussing ring in this and the 600's red band is quit a bit further away from it, imho anyway.
Saying that, it doesn't matter what equipment you have if you are pointing the lens the wrong way ... as he was when this came round the corner. The look on his face as I snapped it with my Pentax K10D and Bigma was priceless.
