Following on from Mypix's redundancy thread, I wondered what everyone else did for a living?

Me? Well I'm currently slumming it... I'm a Senior 3rd line Desktop Engineer (yes, I work in IT) and right now I'm contracting for the City of London supporting approx 4000 users in central government.

By slumming it, I mean that I hate desktop support - my background is 8 years in IT support and the last 6 have been spent on LAN/WAN support - my last contract had me responsible for the internet connectivity for nearly half a million daily users. Still, it pays half decent and I get to work in the city and visit lots of interesting looking buildings round London - so it should be good for photography come the spring/summer months.

So, what about the rest of you then?

PS....extra points will be awarded for uber cool jobs like "pornstar" and "FBI agent" :D

My jobs not as glam as being FBI :(

I'm a mere Mi5 opertive who does a little adult entertainment to top up the beer tokens

is that Über cool still :D

Do I get a bonus point for being on the dole? :(

Background is in video games industry, though. Been a programmer on and off for 20 years - seriously for the last five years, also worked for Gremlin Interactive, Infogrames, and a Doncaster based software publisher nobody will have heard of.

Just over a month ago I said goodbye to around 15 staff my (equal) business parter and I had made redundant.

Most products we manufactured are now imported from China by our customers at a price where they can sell them for less than we could make them.

Virtually every manufacturing business we talk to is in difficulties. Many are so tied to the bank they do not have the option to get out.

So after 25+ years of building a business it is now in the process of being dissolved. I will have some proceeds from the building and assets sale so I shall have to wait and see if/when I need seek employment.

Back to the original question - I did all the CAD/CAM design/programming...set the big CNC sheet metal punch presses and directed the day to day activities of the metalshop. Oh and all the companies IT - built/repaired PC's..ran servers etc.

I should be unemployed by the end of January.

I'm a pornstar :D

Well, actually, nowhere near as interesting as that (if indeed it is interesting :confused- ). I actually work as a midwife, but am looking for a total career change :ponders:

i am general manager for a company manufacturing and distributing acoustic treatments for recording studions, auditoria and home cinema, some of our clients have included the BBC(maida vale studios), Casa Da Musica(portugals national auditorium)Manchester Uni, LIPA...., lots of places in europe and the uk, we also export products to our partners in the US

we also import Soundproofing materials from a different company in america

Is that cool?

minimeze

I'm at a point in my life where i'm considering a career change.......can't think what i'd like to do though, :dizzy:

I've spent almost 2 decades getting to where i am now....really don't fancy another 2 decades doing it though :sadcry:

still, I have to say that i'm in a better position than some in this thread, best wishes and good luck you guys :)

yes ;)

Matty - does that mean you work for Kef? I know they are based in Maidstone....in which case can you do us a deal on some speakers? :thumb:

Also work in IT, IT Manager, Network Administrator, Computer Technician, Technical Trainer:) - Basically Im an IT Tech. for a small company, spend all day repairing, building, teaching, about computers & networks.
I enjoy it - because its what interests me.

Infact the main reason I got into photography was to push myself outdoors occassionally because I was fearful that I was spending way too much time around computers;)

Before I took the year's sabattical I was a Manager in IBM working in an European role. Although lucky enough to be gaurenteed a job back in IBM, I have to find a new position, otherwise one is found for me ( usually travelling round the country :( ). I've changed roles on nearly a yearly basis jumping from Outsourcing Technician, to People Mgmt, to Program Mgmt, bit of Business Ops & then a complete change into an Operations Finance Role.

Experience has taught me that if you have the right attitude of "can do" it goes a long way :) Also realised money isn't everything & have worked a 4 day week for last 2 years, which was an excellent move in terms of work / life balance.

Like others on here I fancy a complete career change.....but yet to decide or have the guts to jump ;)

Best of luck to others on here currently looking for new jobs

Electrical Engineer / Project Manager for Amec Building and Facilities Services.

evilowl - You must be based near me. My office is in Finsbury Square.

Well I have been a mechanical engineer, did that for 12 years, ended up as a Toolmaker, CNC machine tool setter/programmer/operator all City and Guilds qualified, used to do loads of Defense stuff, and also motorsport stuff too, then moved into IT, am now a senior systems engineer, specialising in VMWare.

Also got my Pilots licence in 1989 (Helicopters) although finances meant its not current at the mo, wanted to get a job doing this, but my age caught up with me, and spnsorship got hard to find.

I look after children in a warehouse.:D

Ian, I want to hang out of a helicopter while taking some photos. Problem is, its too expensive.

Yeah not far at all, my office is just over the road from the Guildhall on Gresham St

Done nothing but trawl the roads since I was 21 driving these..

I still like the job but the traffic is a killer now..:(

I'm a contract killer.
The hours are crap but the money is good.

I need some L glass if anyone wants to hire me.

Here's a shocker...
I spent 5 years learning (and occasionally putting into practice) the art of killing people noisily and/or silently depending on the mood the Government of the day was in.
Following a slight mishap which slowed me down a little I moved into a less demanding role and picked up where I'd left off years ago, going back to college, finishing my degree and freelancing on Mountain Bike mags as a part time photographer and writer. As my health improved I returned to the armed forces and ended up where I am now - getting paid full-time to take photographs for the MoD.
Our organisation is Tri-Service and we work direct to DDefPub (Director, Defence Publicity) and the Press Office at No10. Which means we bat well above our weight.
Work's a bit thin on the ground unless we start another war somewhere, but I should be back out to Afghanistan this year, hopefully.

What MTB mags did you send to and what period Rob?

Some of your images might well have inspired my MTB racing and riding exploits.....probably not though :p

MTB Pro and Mountain Bike UK (both Future Publishing titles) back in '93 and '94. I worked with Seb Rogers and Steve Behr, covering the smaller races and the occasional bike test.

yup.....it was through the mint sauce years :D

I've met Steve and Seb a few times.....but not as many times as the little oik hibbard from later years.

:suspect1: Don't get me started on jamie...:suspect1:

I ran into Jo last year and he's still doing the strip. Had a spot of illness which kept him off the bike the year before last as well.

It seems that the gang just broke up. Maria ran and hid from Seb, Russel nicked jo's bird and got married to her, Pavey went mad and hides in a chemistry lab all the time.
And I went back in the Army and got fat (ish)...

Should probably mention, I had my first computer game published in 1994 at the age of 19. I funded the publishing of a second game myself in 1997. Then between 2000 to 2005 I designed, programmed and had published ten PC games, images of which can be found here, along with pictures of a new darts game I'm still working on, two freeware games and a snooker game I abandoned because I couldn't get a publisher interested in it.

All ten have been on sale in high street shops in the UK (specifically, Game, Electronics Boutique and Toys R Us). I think Par Fore and Tennis Ace, and possibly a few of the others, are still on sale now. So I'm quite proud of that.

Don't feel like such a waste of fresh air now... ;)

I'm a househusband to my lovely wife, and 2 beautiful kids, 6 1/2, and 18 months.

During term time it's ace. School holidays are a nightmare.
But it's the best decision I've ever ever made.

Missed alot of my daughters early years through workin silly jobs, silly shifts, and silly hours.
With my son I get to not only see it, but be a big part of it, and I couldn't be happier.

Money's tight, but **** it, you can't take it with you when you're gone, and the bills are paid and there's a roof up top, so we got what's important. :)

I have been working in IT for the last 5 years and am currently a field engineer mainly supporting servers based around the Temple area of the City

Good reading....I'm fortunate to have had three different careers - and I enjoyed every one although not without some haertaches along the way. On leaving school I took a degree in Hotel Management and worked in hotels until our daughter came along. I left (family and hours don't match) for a job lecturing in FE until I rose to the giddy heights of Head of Department.

However someone always spoils things, in this case the Govenment, who, in my opinion, have totally ruined the education system. I could rant and rave all day about that...but that's another story. Anyway I took voluntary redundancy and am now CEO for a small charity. Having been there I feel for MyPix, Robert and GfK and wish you well for the future. I can't remember who but someone in the thread said work to live don't live to work. So true. In my current job I have dealings with children who have problems you don't want to know about- like quadraplegia and Diamond Black Fan Anaemia. That certainly puts things into persepective. Well enough rambling....hope everyone has a good/better 2006.

regards

Nothing interesting from me i'm affraid.... i'm a Test Analyst for Equifax(Credit Reference Agency)

Used to work for one of the big electricity companies but they asked me to transfer to Milton Keynes so I packed them in. (No offence to MK :p )

Started up with my mate doing energy efficiency management for businesses which led into doing the energy contract management. We've since developed that further and provide management services for any of the essential services a business will use from VOIP, mobiles, energy, water, virtually everything. I suppose we're a bit like an outsourced purchasing team in some ways and it's the biggest bit of the business by a mile.

Just a small Co of 4 staff, but we do pretty well against the big boys.

Of course I jest (but you knew that anyway didn't you? :D )

I repair MFD's (multifunctional devices) which is basically the Ricoh range which are copiers/printers/document servers/network scanners all in one box and work predominantly on colour machines and huge high volume 100 copies per minute print room machines.
I cover the whole of the North of Scotland right up to near John O Groats virtually single handedly and work for a company called CMYK DIgital Solutions who are also an authorized Apple Dealer and service agent.

I've been in the industry for over 20 years on and off but have also been a Service Manager for a Juke Box company, a professional bass guitarist, Creative Director of a Manchester based web design company and left school as a Commercial Artist.

I've walked out of one job with no job to go to as I was being screwed, took voluntary redundancy from another and 3 years ago had a self imposed 8 month spell out of work to relocate to Scotland to remarry.

Being out of work was my biggest fear for a long while as I had a 'job for life' mentality but have now learned that as one door closes, another opens, but you need to give it a good kick if the door is stiff.

I treated my job hunting experience(s) as a full time job, getting up at 8am and putting a full days effort in which basically kept my sanity and self worth.
