I thought he was referring to a benchmark or datum arrow?

I thought it was put on the bricks so that the navvies knew which way round the bricks went.

I'm sure I read on Ken Rockwell's site that it meant it is intend to be recycled/thrown out in 10 years.

That site is a good laugh, probably had under it; "in 10 years, I recommend you buy the replacement from here, here or here. It helps me..." :)

lol, Thanks!!
We should start a thread about mystery symbols....like the broadhead arrow sometimes found on old building carved in to the stone!!
WTH!

That'll be a benchmark - if you look on the detailed ordnance survey map that covers the area where the building is, there will be a spot height shown on the map corresponding to the location of that benchmark.

The government arrow wasn't just fpr prisons, all govt. equipment of value or 'desirable' in nature (likely to go home with someone) was marked with the arrow - it still appears from time to to time but less often now.
Lord knows what the mark in the OP means, "recycle me in 10 months"?

Al Brum, weve established the 10 in a circle means the lens' expected life is 10 years and is to be recycled!!
The broad arrow (or crowsfoot) still appears on tools etc!
